The suspect was said to have been having frequent quarrels with his father. On the day of the incident, in the midst of another quarrel, Afonogu allegedly collected his gun from his room and shot his father where he was seated and resting under a tree outside the family compound.

While Recounting his own side of the story to newsmen, Afonogu said: “I am an evangelist and member of the Evergreen Believers Bible Ministry. Before this thing happened, I was having several quarrels with my late father. My father called me on that fateful day and asked me about an electrician that was supposed to work in our house and he gave me N500.

“My late father was a difficult person. The incident happened around 3.00pm. My father called me a ‘mad boy’ and a quarrel ensued. I went inside the room and took my hunter’s gun and shot him.

“I quickly carried him to a nearby bush and buried his corpse because nobody was at home. Immediately I buried him, I ran away. My late father had eight children. The first born died and we have six girls and I am the only son.”

The commissioner further disclosed that the mother of the suspect, Anthonia Afonogu upon hearing that her son had killed his father ran away from home.

But fate caught up with Afongu when youths in the community heard what he had done, launched a manhunt for him, and were able to catch him  four days later. Once caught, the angry youths nearly beat him to death before handing him over to the police at the Oji River Police Station.

Meanwhile, Adamu said the suspect would soon be charged to court.
