Every year the European Commission for Transport publishes a list of airlines banned within the EU; there are many airlines on the list, a lot of which are from Africa (21 of the banned airlines are from the Democratic Republic of Congo alone), but, in Asia, a whopping 57 of them are from Indonesia.
Several factors are taken into consideration in determining which airlines are the most dangerous, including audits from the Federal Aviation Administration, International Civil Aviation Organization, and the airlines’ fatality record. In 2014, Malaysia Airlines was involved in two major tragedies; Flight MH370 went missing over the Indian Ocean in March carrying 239 people, and flight MH17 was hit by a ground-launched missile as it flew over Ukraine. However, due to its overall performance and safety record, Malaysia Airlines still earned 5 out of 7 stars on AirlineRating’s scale. Of course, that’s not going to change the fact that the general public thinks Malaysia’s planes are “flying coffins.” Here are 10 of the world’s most terrifying airlines.
10. Avianca
Avianca is the national airline of Columbia and the second largest in Latin America. It’s been in operation since 1919. While Avianca is safer now than in the booming days of Columbia’s cocaine trade, in the 80s and early 90s the airline was plagued by hijackings, cartel related incidents, and onboard shootings. Avianca’s most deadly incident occurred in 1989. Hoping to kill presidential candidate Cesar Gaviria Trujillo, Medellin cartel leader Pablo Escobar ordered the bombing of Flight 203. Gaviria, however, never boarded the plane. One hundred and ten people died (all the people aboard, plus three ground deaths). Avianca’s last major incident occurred in 1999, when six ELN members hijacked Flight 9643. One passenger was killed. The rest were released over the year following the attack.
