Pelvic inflammatory disease (PID) is a sexually-transmitted infection of the female reproductive organs. If PID is left untreated, it may result in chronic pain around the pelvic area or infertility. Birth control pills normally don’t offer protection against sexually transmitted infections that cause PID, but they offer a small level of protection by thickening the walls of the cervical mucus which makes it pretty difficult for disease-causing bacteria to make it to your uterus, ovaries or fallopian tubes.
