1. Acid Reflux
That burning sensation you feel in your stomach, upper abdomen, or chest after eating is acid reflux, says Kisiel. According to a study published in the journal Gastroenterology, about 20 percent of the population in the U.S. has reported acid reflux symptoms weekly, while stats from the U.S. Healthcare Cost and Utilization Project found that 60 percent of adults in this country will have symptoms at one point in their lives.

The burning can be treated with OTC meds, but if you have any additional symptoms, such as trouble swallowing, unintentionally losing weight, or you’re anemic, visit your doc, who can determine if you need a diagnostic test to rule out cancer, says Kisiel.
