Voodoo – Written by Odega Shawa. I remember back in early 2004 at OJB Jezreel’s Silverpoint Studios in Surulere while Tuface was recording African Queen something I considered weird happened. One of the female singers assisting OJB with work on projects then cut some singles on CD and told me she was going to a ‘Cele church’ to get them to burn candles and smash eggs to bless the CD for her so the songs would ‘blow’.

She vowed that the white garment church could change the fortunes of the songs. I remember I was starting out on my consciousness journey then. I just smiled at her and said nothing. The hustle was real, I liked her a lot and there was no point getting into that argument with her. There were even then of course gospel artistes that didn’t ‘blow’.
The other side of God is voodoo, both represent the supernatural. God just supersedes voodoo. Does voodoo (or juju, as it is mostly referred to here) sell songs? Is there a supernatural force out there: God, devil or illuminati, that if you as a singer somehow connect with would make your listeners warm up to your efforts?
Just recently someone accused Nigerian A-list rapper Olamide on social media of using ‘juju’ to make his career shine. It seemed frivolous when I saw the reports. Crazy, right? But a casual look around will show that the idea is something which almost everybody agrees with.
As vicious as it seems when Da Grin and MC Loaf died under very similar circumstances: car on road accidents, both with brilliant careers just about on the blaze, hip hop vine murmured that they got involved in ritual self-deposits. You do some secret rituals that shortens your life so would outshine every other person in the field and go out in a flare.
The idea is more than local conspiracy theory. Prominent heads of the US music entertainment scene like Jay Z and his wife Beyonce have been accused of being illuminati. You know The Illuminati. That secret and powerful cult ring with dark and sinister blood rituals and covenants running everything there is to run in the world. Fair share interviews of people like Jay Z and his wife are all over youtube. Conspiracy theory enthusiasts pore over them, marking out and highlighting hand signs and dress codes, postures and dressing that clearly symbolize the dark arts of freemasonry.
Recently, when Kanye West had a meltdown probably caused by exhaustion youtube videos sprang up on conspiracy channels. Really? Is it just exhaustion? What kind of exhaustion is that? They should tell us the truth, really. Kanye had sacrificed his mother’s life for money and fame and now is facing the consequences.
Is any of this real?
Voodoo, as we know it today, started out in Africa. It is a metamorphosis of ancestor worship, a digest of the indigenous people’s religions. Traditionally the cosmology of voodoo was divided along good and bad lines: the good protects, the bad destroys. With the advent of Christianity and Islam both sides got lumped into one chunk of darkness, bad for everyone – except in areas like Cotonou. Voodoo is still a national religion in Benin Republic.
These days any successful person generally, and successful musician particularly, could be fingered for using voodoo for their success and life achievements. Prominent Nigerian music gurus like Emoney and his brother KCee often fall victim to this dubious and quite exasperating bit of weirdo vine.
It is so difficult to make it out there that it sometimes makes more sense to believe that those that are making it are using something dark and evil, something you, being better, can never sink low enough to use. Sincerely speaking, that kind of thinking makes it convenient for people to deal with the fact that they have not made it yet. This can explain why the idea and rumours of using voodoo to create success is popular everywhere.
I still don’t know if it is all real or not.
The fact is I cannot say if it is real or not, if people could actually make their careers shine with the help of dark powers unavailable to their soft hearted mates. The truth is it is probably all mental placebo, something people are subconsciously convinced about and then their inner conviction forces them to relate that with actual experience. It exists in medicine. They give you a capsule filled with water and it tricks your mind into curing your nervous headache.
But it is not all nonsense. Ghanaian gospel artiste Jak Alolome recently stated that: ‘It is true some gospel musicians are engaging in juju but those in secular music are also doing same.’ Another Ghanaian artiste Dada Kwaku Duah, aka, Dada KD, has spoken openly about the practice among Ghanaian performing music entertainers.
Wow. So artistes actually go out of their way to try this. But does it work?
I needed to get a babalawo to explain that part. And I did. That dangerous adventure would be next on this space. Stay tuned!
