Kolo Toure and Wilfried Bony were among the mourners as Cheick Tiote was laid to rest on Sunday. The former Newcastle midfielder died at the age of 30 almost two weeks ago when he collapsed during a training session with Chinese side Beijing Enterprise. His body was returned to the Ivory Coast last week and his funeral took place in the presence of friends, family and the military.
According to Mirror Online, The country’s prime minister, sports minister and the football federation president were also in attendance. A memorial service was held in the Chinese capital last Tuesday which was also attended by family, friends and former teammates. Meanwhile, Tiote’s former Newcastle teammate Papiss Cisse paid tribute to his friend earlier on Sunday. After scoring in Shandong Luneng’s win in China, Cisse lifted his shirt to reveal a message that read, “I love you, Cheicky, forever Tiote.”
