A 300-level student known as Oluwapelumi Joseph Olona of the Federal university of technology Akure, Ondo state, decided to end it all after dealing with fraud allegations in his department.
According to a source, he was found in his room in the early hours on Saturday, 21st of January, 2023 when his close friend forced the door open after he was unable to reach the deceased.
Various sources revealed that his death might be connected to depression and the financial problem he battled as the financial secretary of his department until his demise.
Omoniyi Enoch known to be one of the deceased friends spoke to the Union of campus journalist in FUTA.
He stated that the deceased had issues with his department as he was the financial secretary.
According to him, the deceased collected payments of dues in the absence of the treasurer when the session started. The president of the association told him to send 100,000 naira for a departmental project out of the money.
He sent it, but it wasn’t received by the president. He reportedly tried going to the bank to resolve the issue to no avail, hence he was being pressured by the department to refund the money.
In his words:
“When school resumed for the 2021/2022 session, the Treasurer of the Department wasn’t around to receive payment for dues so Joseph (Olona) decided to do it on his behalf.
“The President later requested that he should send N100,000 to him for a Departmental project. He sent it using his digital bank. He was debited but the President didn’t receive the payment.
“Several emails were sent to the bank but the issue wasn’t resolved. Due to that, he was so pressured about it and everyone secluded him. He hasn’t attended lectures since we got back from the Christmas break because of the pressure.
“Yesterday morning, I went to get my phone from him because his phone is faulty and we both shared my phone. He informed me that his HOD called his daddy and said he engaged in fraud. He was very disturbed about it.”
