Alhasan Doguwa, the Majority Leader of the House of Representatives, has announced his intention to run for the speakership of the 10th National Assembly, citing his family as proof of his ability to lead.
Speaking at an event in Abuja, Doguwa, who represents the Tundun Wada/Doguwa federal constituency of Kano State, also stated that he had paid his dues to the party and that it was now time for him to be rewarded with the position.
Responding to criticism that he lacked the competence and right temperament to replace the current speaker, Femi Gbajabiamila, due to his erratic behavior, Doguwa defended his record, saying: “Even as Chief Whip of the House of Representatives, I did not exhibit any high temperament. For those who refer to me as a high-level temperamental person, they have misperceived Ado Doguwa, the man who has four wives and 28 children.”
He went on to add: “I have never had a divorce. That shows I have what it takes to excel as the next speaker. I will be a carpet for Nigerians to march or walk on.”
Doguwa’s announcement comes as the race for the speakership of the House of Representatives heats up, with several lawmakers eyeing the position. It remains to be seen whether Doguwa’s family and record will be enough to secure him the top spot.
The 10th National Assembly is set to be inaugurated in June, and the election for speaker of the House of Representatives is expected to take place shortly thereafter.
