Kolo Toure

While not a drug junkie per se, Kolo Toure did use some pills to lose weight. Back in 2011, the Ivorian center-back was banned for six months after failing a drug test. Toure was concnvinced that he was fat, and although that was just his perception, he proceeded to take water tablets recommneded by a friend of his wife Mahoo. Fernando Couto Fernando Couto, the former Portuguese centre-back, enjoyed a relatively successful career. In a career that spawned for 21 years, Couto played for the likes of Porto, Parma and Barcelona. He is also one of the most capped players, but back in 2001 his career was somehow tainted. He failed a drug test while he was playing for Lazio, after test showed that nandrolone was present in his urine sample. Couto served 4 months out of a 9 month ban and was fined $60,000. #8. Mark Bosnich

Mark Bosnich was not run of the mill as a footballer. He experienced many highs and lows during his career, largely spent in England. Back in April 2003, the Australian goalkeeper was found guilty after testing positive for cocaine in 2002. Bosnich claimed that his drink had been spiked with the drug while out, and he even appealed the nine-month ban, to no avail. The Aussie keeper was immediately suspended by Chelsea. #7. Jake Livermore Former Tottenham midfielder Jake Livermore tested postive for cocaine earlier in May and although he is still part of Hull City, he will not be able to play for the Tigers the coming season. Livermore, who has made one appearance for England, tested positive after a post-match drug test. Hull City have confirmed that they have suspended the 25-year-old midfielder. #6. Garry O’Connor Former Hibernian and Scotland striker Garry O’Connor tested postive for cocaine back in 2009, when he was playing for Birmingham City in the Premier League. O’Connor has revealed that he has spent £4 million on drugs, alcohol and fast cars. It’s a pity when you think that once he was a hero at Hibernian but it seems that success got over his head. The 32-year-old striker now plays for Selkirk, a team in the fifth tier of Scottish football. #5. Jaap Stam Back in the late 1990s and early 2000s, Jaap Stam was widely regarded as one of the best defenders, and rightly so. He was strong, quick and technically gifted, making him one of the most completed defenders of his era. However, back in 2001, he failed a drug test and was given a five-month ban. Stam tested positive for steroid nandrolone and after some appeals, his ban was reduced to just one month. He went on to have a great career nevertheless. #4. Edgar Davids Edgar Davids, the popular Dutch footballer, couldn’t escape the nandrolone hype back in the early 2000s. Davids, dubbed Pitbull for his fierce style of play, failed a drug test in 2001 and tested positive for the steroid nandrolone. At the time he was playing for Juventus, and he faced a two-year ban. But fortunately for him, the ban was reduced to just four months. Davids is still one of the most popular players in Netherlands. #3. Adrian Mutu Former Romanian striker Adrian Mutu was hailed as one of the most promising players in the early 2000s, and his career took off when he signed for Chelsea in the summer of 2003. Mutu had a decent first season, but his second season saw him at odds with Chelsea’s new manager Jose Mourinho. To make matters worse, in September 2004 the Romanian striker failed a drug tust for cocaine. He was banned for six-months. Mutu failed another drug test in 2010. #2. Pep Guardiola With so many footballers testing positive for steroid nandrolone in the early 2000s, it seems that doping was common back in the days. Pep Guardiola, one of the best managers in the world, was no exception. Back in 2001 when he was playing for Roma, Pep tested positive for nandrolone, receiving a four month ban. He was a drug junkie and he was banned teice for his consitent doping. Back in 1991, Maradona failed a drug test, testing positive for cocaine and was banned for 15 months as a consequence.
