Just in case you don’t know who he is, here’s a little introduction: Bishop David Oyedepo is the founder and presiding head of the church Living Faith Church Worldwide (popularly known as Winners Chapel). He is also the chancellor of Covenant and Landmark University.
2017 seems to be the year for the richest pastor in Nigeria (according to Forbes in 2011). The Bishop, as he is fondly called, has recently dedicated another church in Lekki. In addition, back in May 2017, a parish of the Church in Houston, Texas, was also launched to the Joy of leaders and members. Nevertheless, this article is only about David Oyedepo’s new church building, the one in Lekki, Ajah that was dedicated in November.
Bishop David Oyedepo’s Church Plan
The interesting thing is that there have been reports that the latest David Oydepo church building was made as a form of contribution to the church and another interesting fact is that it is said to cost a whopping 1 billion naira ( 1,000,000,000 for emphasis).
The man involved in the building has chosen to remain anonymous, but sources believe that he’s a pastor of an unidentified church denomination. There was a lot of excitement in the air as the bishop dedicated the church building. Oyedepo reiterated that the Winner’s megachurch that was built two years ago in Ota, Ogun State, Nigeria, would remain the central place of worship for every member of Winners’ chapel.
David Oyedepo’s Church Capacity
The new church building capacity is said to only be 1000 seats, which is dwarfed by Winners’ Canaanland that has a seating capacity of 50, 0000. This volume statistics, clearly, shows why David Oyedepo new church building can’t hold a general convention service, no matter how magnificent it may look. Any plan to make the recently constructed auditorium into the primary service center will require a pre-construction expansion of the church’s capacity.
Now there are a lot of questions to ask, some of which are: who built this beautiful house for the Lord? How did it happen? The choice of the dedicator to remain anonymous is not a huge surprise to many. With the sudden rise of “wannabe whistleblowers,” who wouldn’t?
The question on the mind of members is what will happen to this expensive gift. David Oyedepo’s church plan was to have one central church building in Lagos, which, currently, is the one in Ota. At the moment, nobody knows if that remains the Bishop’s plan. Also, Canaanland, according to Guinness book of record in 2015, has the most extensive auditorium in the world.
Furthermore, The Bishop has reiterated, again and again, that the new facility will only hold midweek services until he receives a divine intervention that satellite Winner’s centers in and around Lagos can start using it for Sunday church services.
