15 things you probably didn’t know about Eminem’s Marshall Mathers LP

Eminem’s Marshall Mathers LP : May 23, 2015 marked 15 years since one of the greatest rap albums of the 21st century, The Marshall Mathers LP by Eminem, was released. With the new material, Marshall Mathers, III transformed himself from the jokey “My Name Is” rapper into the biggest hip-hop star in the world, as well as one of the greatest artists of the last 15 years.

1. Eminem originally toyed with naming the album Amsterdam. “I just had this thing stuck on for a while about Amsterdam, like ‘Yo, the place is so fuckin’ crazy! Hookers are legal – anything!’ [In] the Red Light District, everything was just kind of … a free-for-all, it felt like. I kind of felt like it had a connection, a similarity with my music, kind of like ‘anything goes.’ So I got on that kick for a while, that I was gonna call the album Amsterdam .”

2. “Kim” was the first track Em recorded for the album while he was touring for the Slim Shady LP. “It was, uh, quite intense to see the passion he had. Uh, it was freaky.” – Jeff Bass, producer of “Kim,” reflecting on his initial reaction after Em rapidly turned his musical composition into one of the darkest songs ever recorded.

3. Em first heard what would become the “Kill You” beat while he was on the phone with Dre and he overheard the instrumental in the background. With only “Kim” ready for the album, Em ventured to Amsterdam where he “did drugs and wrote,” while producers were busy crafting the productions back in the U.S. Em and Dre were having a conversation about the new album and Dre had what would become the beat to “Kill You” playing in the background. Em asked Dre to send him the beat, and the rest was history.

4. The 45 King got the idea for the “Stan” beat while paying bills, and he recorded the sample from his television. The 45 King was sitting on his bed paying bills, when the commercial for the film Sliding Doors featuring “Thank You” by Dido came on the television. The 45 King, who appears to be something of a freakish genius, taped the track from his television without knowing anything about Dido, looped it into a beat, and sent it over to Interscope.

5. Em and Dre submitted the album to Interscope in March 2000, but Jimmy Iovine said it needed more. “The Way I Am” and “The Real Slim Shady” were the result. “I thought the album was spectacular, but they hadn’t taken it as far as they could… I thought we needed something lighter… to introduce the record to kind of get people into it,” Jimmy Iovine recalled. Dre remembers: “I knew we had a second and a third single, but we needed that big opener.”

Em was furious and responded by making “The Way I Am,” which he considered to be the opposite of a single (ironically, it became the second single). In the 11th hour before the final album was due, Em offered to try one final idea he had: the chorus to “The Real Slim Shady.” In what was a quite unusual workflow for the duo, Dre then made the instrumental to fit Em’s chorus.

Jimmy was pleased. Em said, “After listening to it five or six times it became cheesy. I was like ‘Yo, this probably could be it,” because after listening to “My Name Is” a few times it ended up becoming cheesy to me, too. And I was like ‘Okay this is the formula then.’”

This tracklist appears on the bottom of a lyric sheet featured in Em’s memoir The Way I Am . It was probably made just before Em had created “The Real Slim Shady.” He makes note of “Kim” and “Bitch Please 2” elsewhere on the page, but it seems he hadn’t decided where to place them yet. And “Under the Influence” later replaced “Shit On You” as the D-12 track. Mistake? Yes.

7. The Marshall Mathers LP was Eminem’s last solo album recorded to analogue. As a result, very little of the live instrumentation was looped or programmed. Starting with The Eminem Show , Em recorded and Dre produced digitally in ProTools.

8. 11 of the 14 songs on the album contain violent and misogynistic lyrics and 9 of them specifically depict killing women by means of choking, stabbing, drowning, shooting, as well as head and throat splitting. He’s just playin’ ladies. You know he loves you.

9. The clean version of the album still contained a lot of curse words. A bit of an oddity, the “edited” version of The MMLP was still laced with curse words: “ass, b*tch, goddamn, sh*t, and n*gga,” to name but a few. Many a young suburban tween who compromised with their parents for the clean copy got shafted when Mom discovered (much to her horror) that sweet little Eric was listening to mildly dirty words, despite the lack of a Parental Advisory sticker.

Thankfully, at least those parents never had to find out about the existence of “Kim,” which appeared only on the explicit version and was famously replaced by “Kids” for the kiddy version.

10. But even the explicit version was somewhat censored. In the eponymous cut “Marshall Mathers,” Marshall raps something that sounds like: “It doesn’t matter …. F*ggot!” However, that line was actually partially censored, almost certainly at the recommendation of a wise Interscope lawyer. The line was originally said: “It doesn’t matter [your attorney Fred Gibson’s a] f*ggot. Fred Gibson was Marshall’s mom’s (Debbie’s) attorney at the time when she sued her son.

And in “I’m Back” Em got expurgated for two words: “I take seven [kids] from [Columbine], stand ‘em all in line…” Thankfully, he filled in the blanks for us 13 years later in “Rap God” on the album’s sequel.

11. MMLP has made an obscene amount of money. It sold 1.76 million copies in its first week, 3.65 million copies in four weeks, 7.9 million copies by the end of 2000, and over 11 million copies by May 2015. Oh, and that’s just in the U.S. To date, the album has sold an estimated 32 millions copies worldwide. It’s the biggest-selling hip-hop album of all time by most metrics, the fastest-selling studio album by any solo artist in American music history, and one of the biggest selling albums of all time worldwide overall. And the album has also performed well on download platforms (such as iTunes) and streaming platforms (such as Spotify) that weren’t even in existence for the May 2000 release. A rough estimate suggests that the album has grossed around half a billion dollars.

12. Eminem flew coach until The Marshall Mathers LP dropped. “You don’t know how famous you are until you’re sitting in coach and people won’t leave you the fuck alone and let you sleep.” Em also tells a story of a time when he fell asleep at an airport gate and woke up to realize that people had been staring at him the entire time. (He also says they were hot girls. Poor Marshall.)

13. French jazz pianist Jacques Loussier filed a $10 million lawsuit against Universal Music Group, claiming the beat for “Kill You” was stolen from his recording “Pulsion” without permission. Loussier’s son was allegedly a Stan and showed his pops the similarities. Ultimately, the parties settled out of court for “undisclosed remuneration.”

P.S. How the hell did Interscope not even try to clear this sample? This shit is completely blatant:
