As Brandon Teena in Boys Don’t Cry and Maggie Fitzgerald inMillion Dollar Baby, she dug deep to tackle interesting, multi-faceted roles. Still, her characters seem to share a similar need to be “one of the guys” that makes her awfully tough to like, which may explain her surprisingly limited opportunities since her last Best Actress trophy in 2004.
