Together with Howard Wolowitz, a mechanical engineer, and Rajesh Koothrappali, an astrophysicist, they spend their time doing stereotypical nerdy activities such as shopping for comic books, playing video games and watching science fiction movies. The group’s friendship is often tested as Sheldon is quite eccentric and non-conventional. Leonard’s world turns upside down when he and Sheldon get a new neighbor named Penny. After meeting her, he does everything in his power to get Penny as his girlfriend.

10. A Bee Was Named After The Show According to the NY Daily News , a Brazilian biologist named a species of bee “Euglossa Bazinga,” after Sheldon Cooper’s catchphrase, “Bazinga.”

Biologist Andre Nemesio said that he decided to name the bee after Sheldon’s catchphrase because the bee was “clever” like Sheldon, tricking scientists for some time with its similarity to other species. His findings were published in 2013, in the zoological taxonomist journal, Zootaxa .

9. Melissa Rauch’s Voice There are a few things you may not know about actress Melissa Rauch’s voice. She actually does two voices on The Big Bang Theory , neither of which are her natural voice.

Firstly, Rauch has admitted that she does not speak in her natural tone to play Bernadette’s high-pitched voice; she got her inspiration from her own mother. Secondly, Rauch also mimics the scratchy, loud voice of Howard’s mother when they trade verbal blows; she based this voice on her father’s.

In an interview featured on the New York Post , Rauch admitted that she comes from a screaming family very similar to the Wolowitz household. She stated, “when my husband came to my parent’s house for the first time he asked ‘why is everyone screaming? Why are they so angry?’ I said ‘no one’s angry. This is just how we communicate.’ ”

8. Raj’s Woman Problem Is Based Off Of The Executive Producer Raj has a very particular problem when it comes to women: he is so shy that he only has the confidence to talk to them after he has been drinking.

It turns out that creators of The Big Bang Theory did not completely make up Raj’s problem: executive producer Bill Prady could not talk to women unless drunk while he worked at a computer company. Talk about life imitating art!

7. Kaley Cuoco and Johnny Galecki dated Kaley Cuoco (who plays the role of Penny) and Johnny Galecki (who plays Leonard) had a secret love affair for two years while they were filming the show. Galecki spoke fondly of his co-star in an interview featured with the Daily Mail.

The former Roseanne star stated how he and Cuoco are “not just” exes but are still “dear friends” and a part of each other’s lives. He also admitted that he and Cuoco decided to keep their relationship secret due to the on and off again relationship of Penny and Leonard on the show: they did not want to confuse or distract their fans.

6. Both Sheldon and Jim Parsons Are From Texas Sheldon Cooper was born in Galveston, Texas in 1980. Throughout the series, Sheldon mimics Texan mannerisms as he was misunderstood and constantly bullied while growing up.

Interestingly enough, the actor who plays Sheldon, Jim Parsons, also grew up in Texas. He was born on March 24 th , 1973 in Houston. He stayed in Texas until getting his Bachelor’s degree and moved to California to pursue his Master’s degree.

5. The Big Bang Theory Features Three Actors From Roseanne The Big Bang Theory cast is composed of three actors from the hit ’90s sitcom Roseanne. Sara Gilbert, who plays Leslie on Big Bang Theory , played Darlene (Roseanne’s daughter) on Roseanne .

Galecki landed his first major role on TV by playing the role of Darlene’s boyfriend, David. Lastly,Laurie Metcalf, who plays Sheldon’s mother on Big Bang Theory , starred in Roseanne as Jackie, Roseanne’s sister.

Jim Parsons Has Never Watched Star Trek or Doctor Who Star Trek is among Sheldon Cooper’s favorite TV shows; he makes numerous references to the franchise throughout the series: his arch nemesis being Wil Wheaton (who played Weasley on Star Trek: The Next Generation ), dressing up as Data in “The Bakersfield Expedition,” and in a script he writes, he mentions being taken away by Spock due to his superior intelligence.

Despite Cooper’s interest in Star Trek , Jim Parsons has never watched the show. Parsons has also never watched Doctor Who , another one of Sheldon’s favorite shows.

3. Soft Kitty Is A Real Song Whenever Sheldon was feeling sick when he was a child, his mother would sing him “Soft Kitty.” The song has made numerous appearances throughout the series, particularly being sung by Penny early on in the show.

Whereas the song was popularized by The Big Bang Theory , it originates from 19 th century Poland. The modern version of the 20 th century translates to “Warm Kitty” but the writers edited it to “Soft Kitty”. While the lyrics are different, the tune is the same. Executive producer Bill Prady first heard the song at his daughter’s pre-school.

2. Jim Parsons Was Cast On The Spot When Jim Parsons auditioned for the role of Sheldon Cooper, Chuck Lorre, the creator of the show, found he was such a good fit that he immediately asked Parsons to come in for a second audition.

Though Lorre was sure he wanted Parsons to play the role, he wanted a second audition to be 100 percent sure. When Parsons nailed the second audition, Lorre cast him on the spot.
