3. Peter Beardsley
Former England schemer Peter Beardsley made just a solitary appearance for Ron Atkinson’s Manchester United in 1982 after a £250,000 transfer from Canadian outfit Vancouver Whitecaps.
The player couldn’t break into the first team and hopped back over the Atlantic just a few months later after being released on a free transfer in March 1983.
It may have been a mistake for the club to let him go as Beardsley went on to become a star player for Newcastle United, rivals Liverpool and Everton before ending his career in Australia with Melbourne Knights.
Beardsley played 59 times for the England national team and 237 goals in almost 800 club games as a professional.
