South African music producer, DJ Maphorisa, has been arrested for allegedly assaulting his girlfriend, Thuli Phongolo, at her apartment in Sandton, Johannesburg.
Phongolo, an actress and club DJ, reported the incident to the police and gave a statement at the Sandton police station, claiming that Maphorisa physically assaulted her after she confronted him about their argument from the previous night.
She alleged that Maphorisa punched her on her chest, took her to the balcony and grabbed her aggressively by the neck.
She also claimed that Maphorisa took her phone during the assault, but later returned it.
“He became aggressive and started to punch me with his fists on my chest. He held me and took me to the balcony, and grabbed me aggressively by my neck,” She said in her statement.
Phongolo contacted her manager, who took her to the police station to file a domestic abuse case against Maphorisa.
He is expected to appear in court on a charge of assault at the Randburg Magistrate’s Court.
The incident has sparked outrage on social media, with many people demanding justice for Phongolo.
In response, the South African Police Service (SAPS) issued a statement urging victims of domestic violence to report cases to the police.
“We condemn all forms of violence against women and children, and we encourage victims to come forward and report these cases to the police. We will do everything in our power to ensure that perpetrators are brought to justice,” the statement read.
