Kano State Police have apprehended a 22-year-old man, Imrana Muhammad, on charges of trespassing into cemeteries and pilfering gravestones.
The suspect was captured at the Tudun Wada Cemetery in Nasarawa LGA, where he had already removed approximately 20 gravestones.
During his interrogation, the culprit admitted to the crime, revealing that he had been engaging in this illicit activity for an extended period.
His modus operandi involved selling the stolen gravestones to scavengers and scrap dealers.
Imrana disclosed that he would collect an estimated 20 to 30 gravestones each day and promptly deliver them to his buyers, who would compensate him at a rate of N300 per kilogram.
When questioned about the total number of gravestones he had stolen, Imrana confessed, “I cannot precisely quantify the exact count of gravestones I have stolen so far. However, I typically visit cemeteries around 3 a.m., dismantle the iron boards, and subsequently sell them to scrap dealers.”
