She has earned a Golden Globe Award and a Grammy Award among others including an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actress in “Chicago.” Latifah is the first hip-hop artist to be given a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. She’s also a celebrity spokesperson for CoverGirl cosmetics, and has her own line of cosmetics for women of color called the CoverGirl Queen Collection.

7. Whoopi Goldberg This actress, comedian, singer, talk show, political activist and author host was the first African American woman to host the Academy Awards solo in 1994. She is also in the EGOT Winner’s Circle: an elite group to have won an Oscar, a Grammy, a Tony and an Emmy. She won her first Golden Globe Award for her portrayal of Celie in “The Color Purple” in 1985. It was also her film debut! Whoopi became moderator of the longtime-running daytime talk show “The View” in 2007. We’ll always love her for work in “Ghost” playing the wacky psychic Oda Mae Brown alongside Patrick Swayze, for which she won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress in 1990.

Regina King It all started in 1985 when she played Brenda Jenkins on the NBC sitcom “227.” But we know her from films like “Miss Congeniality 2: Armed and Fabulous,” “Poetic Justice,” “Friday,” “Enemy of the State,” “Legally Blonde 2: Red, White & Blonde,” and her supporting role in the feature film “Jerry Maguire.” She’s made her way back to television with a recurring role on “Big Bang Theory,” voicing characters Huey and Riley Freeman on the animated series “Boondock Saints,” and as Detective Lydia Adams on TNT’s popular “Southland.” Her role on “Southland” earned her two nominations for the Critics’ Choice Television Award for Best Supporting Actress in a Drama Series.

5. Angela Bassett This sexy starlet started her career in the film “What’s Love Got to Do with It” in 1992 portraying Tina Turner. Actually, Angela has become well known for her biographical film roles portraying real-life women. In addition to portraying Tina Turner, she has played Rosa Parks in “The Rosa Parks Story,” Voletta Wallace in Notorious,” Katherine Jackson in “The Jacksons: An American Dream,” and Betty Shabazz in “Malcolm X” and “Panther.” Bassett won a Golden Globe and earned an Academy Award nomination for her work in “What’s Love Got to Do with It.” She was the first African-American to win the Golden Globe Award in the category of Best Actress – Motion Picture Musical or Comedy.

Jada Pinkett Smith This talented Hollywood actress first hit the small screen in 1990 in an episode of the sitcom “True Colors.” Her first break was landing and a role on the “Cosby Show” spinoff “A Different World” in 1991. Her role in the 1994 film “A Low Down Dirty Shame” received critical acclaim. Since then, she’s starred in several films including “Scream 2,” “Bamboozled,” and “The Nutty Professor” starring alongside Eddie Murphy. She is married to celebrity hottie Will Smith, and is the mother of the Jaden and Willow Smith, who are gaining fame in their own right.

3. Kerry Washington You know her from the ABC drama “Scandal,” in which she plays Olivia Pope, a crisis management expert to the President of the United States. She actually made her screen debut in 1994, with no notable roles until she landed the female lead in Spike Lee’s “She Hate Me” in 2004. She received rave reviews and a wider audience began to take notice. She went on to appear in many films and is known for her roles as Ray Charles’s wife in “Ray” and Idi Amin’s wife in “The Last king of Scotland.” When “Scandal” premiered, Kerry Washington was the first black actress to star in a network TV dramatic series in almost 40 years.

In1998 she produced and starred in the film titled “Beloved.” In 2009 she launched her very own network, “The Oprah Winfrey Network” also called OWN. She produced and costarred in “Selma” which was nominated for Best Picture at the 2015 Oscars. Although being an actress probably isn’t her top priority, she scored the number two spot on our list. Since 2002, her stock has only continued to rise with her work in the franchise “X-Men.” In 2008, she was named Esquire’s “Sexiest Woman Alive.” In 2009, Halle made Empire’s list of 100 Sexiest Film Stars. This busy mom of two tops the list because she brings home bank and she’s damn good-looking doing it.
