While some dogs are popular because of their physical appearance, often these breeds are characterized by less than favourable temperaments that don’t match the way the animal looks.
The 101 Dalmatians film was met with widespread success in the nineties and sparked a Dalmatian obsession across the world. Little did most people know at the time, but the breed was aggressive and unpleasant for the most part – not ideal to become a family dog. Bulldogs and pugs are incredibly popular today, but the breeds are plagued with respiratory problems and reproductive problems. They may look cute, but they’ll cost their owner a fortune in medical bills.
We’ve rounded up a list of ten of the ugliest breeds of dogs in the world below. While these dogs may not be the most aesthetically pleasing, many of them are known for their incredible demeanors. In fact, it almost seems like what they lack in attractiveness, they’ve make up for in being smart, gentle and affectionate. Many of the breeds mentioned below are even used as obedience, herding or guide dogs due to their dispositions and intelligence. Besides, we’d much rather own an unconventional-looking dog than one who looks like the rest of the pack. No pun intended.
10. English Bull Terrier
Widely known for being the Target mascot, the English Bull Terrier is a distinctively ugly breed that’s hard to forget. Characterized by its egg-shaped head, this dog usually weighs about 40 pounds and stands at 22 inches tall. They live for 13 years on average and cost a whopping $1,200 per puppy. They’re known for being aggressive and protective, making them an ideal breed to participate in agility and obedience training. Due to the angle that their ears sit at, English Bull Terriers experience many hearing problems and often go deaf later in life.
