The longer we have R-rated shows making it all more realistic, the better. Particularly as that seems to have driven conventional TV shows to push the boundaries even more. Where else would you see a blood-soaked orgy between monstrous horror characters, or Fifty Cent's uncensored penis, or zombie holocaust survivors pausing from scrabbling for life to tenderly boff each other between attacks? That's the great thing about TV these days - it's absolutely more mental than it ever has been, and it's still just as obsessed with rudeness. It's just that it's a lot braver to actually explore that sexuality nowadays. Here are the hottest, best written and funniest sex scenes from 2016's TV shows. 15. Fiddy's Ding-A-Ling - Power 2016 was the year rap star 50 Cent showed his wiener on a TV show and then got incredibly outraged. The episode in question was pretty hot, in all honesty - how many shows feature mutual masturbation these days? - and the scene captured his character Kannan masturbating in a frankly astonishingly unedited moment. Prior to the show, Fiddy seemed surprisingly casual about getting his junk out: "I don't give a f**k. First it was supposed to be darker [after footage was edited]. You couldn't see it on the screen. The show was created as a direct response to the inauthentic portrayal of BDSM relationships and sex in Fifty Shades, so you always knew it was going to be filth. It's almost like the once absolutely raunchy show has grown away from its blue roots, or something. But every now and then we do get a well-placed frot, with the best of the last season celebrating Yara Greyjoy's sexuality in a way that was wonderfully normalising and horribly awkward for her watching, penisless brother. We have a new LGBT hero to get behind, and hopefully she's going to take heads and bed whores like the good old days. 12. Cuba Gooding Versus The Witch - American Horror Story: Roanoke Who doesn't love a sex scene between a possessed straight laced guy in glasses and a demonic Lady Gaga in the woods? Thankfully, we can now all actually test out the answer to that, because of the latest series of American Horror Story: Roanoke. It's some achievement to make everything else that came before it in this absolutely bonkers show seem far less memorable by proximity, but that's precisely what this vigorous, not entirely enthusiastic tryst in the dark. That's what you get when one party is pretty much out of his mind. The two were discovered, quite horrifically by Sarah Poulsen's Shelby - as were the two hillbillies watching the sex and masturbating, DESPITE THE FACT THAT IT'S IN PITCH BLACK. So presumably, it's just the sound and the smell they're getting off on. God help us all. 11. Elijah And Dill - Girls If sex scenes aren't hilarious, they should seek to be as authentic and realistic as possible, no matter how awkward or gross or unflattering. TV hasn't quite caught up on that whole message, but Girls did score one for progress with the awkward and occasionally hilarious scene between Elijah (Andrew Rannells) and Dill Harcourt (Corey Stoll) in last year's episode 4. It's biggest selling point was its authenticity, a strangely historical face to face scene between men that didn't flinch from the reality or replace the realness with animal passion. And thanks to Dill being the bottom, unexpectedly, but remaining a dominant character, we got this strange dynamic where he was in the driving seat without actually driving. He shouted, Elijah apologised, almost crumpling under the stress in one of the most delightfully awkward sex scenes of the year. 10. Baby-us Interruptus - Easy It's a horrible revelation when you're blessed with the arrival of new life that the little screaming, pooping darling you've created through sex is basically the enemy of your attempt to ever have it again. That reality was brilliantly reflected on Netflix's Easy, on which enthusiastic sex-fan couple Tom (Orlando Bloom) and Lucy (Malin Akerman) use Tinder to try and set up a threesome. They swipe on a mutual friend (played by Kate Micucci) and their three-way kicks off well, only to be interrupted twice by the baby monitor. But at least they eventually persist, and the adventure uncharacteristically isn't used as a crutch to destroy their relationship as seems to happen on screen way too much. 9. A Good Old-Fashioned Foot-Job - How To Get Away With Murder As Pulp Fiction made very clear, you don't give anyone a foot massage without it being a precursor to sex (or an unexpressed desire for it to happen). As How To Get Away With Murder proved, that's very sound wisdom, given how erotically charged touching someone's feet can be. Particularly if it's done with a kind of stoic intensity, whispery, near-growled intent and a body chiseled out of actual marble. This is foreplay as it's very rarely shown on TV, a sort of furtive, pre-coital face-off, as Nate attempted to encourage Annalise to report her harassment to the police. That's certainly one way to make her try and see sense. Infamously, an earlier sex scene between the two saw Viola Davis put her back out after going for it a little too intensely, but this was all about restraint and the build. 8. Judy's Threesome - Orange Is The New Black If there's one thing that Orange Is The New Black has taught us all, it's that being locked up in prison is absolutely no excuse for not getting your kicks and thrills. And why should your age stand in the way of such a free expression of sex? Too often, TV shows and movies seem to think that being old means hanging up your knocking boots, which misses the point that a lot of retirement homes are basically sex colonies. Rick And Michonne - The Walking Dead Though it's always been primarily invested in showing the survivors trying not to get bitten or have their heads smashed in, The Walking Dead is actually more about human relationships than it is walkers. UTI Sex - Crazy Ex-Girlfriend Comedy plays as big a part in sex as raunchiness. Or at least it does in my house. Form a queue, ladies. Crazy Ex-Girlfriend deftly played with the inherent funniness and awkwardness of sex, at the same time as celebrating Rebecca's sexuality and her sexual appetite in a way that really ought to be done more. Her sexy relationship with Greg was the subject of a will-they-won't-they plot-line not seen since Rachel got off the plane, but with a decidedly more adult edge. And nothing along the way beat their marathon sex session that started with a promise to "ruin each other" and ended with Rebecca getting a UTI. And the best part came next, as Greg misinterpreted the UTI as proof that he's great at sex (pay attention in school kids, this is not true) with a song containing the immortally brilliant line "My penis is the reason you may die, die, die." 5. Misty And Luke Cage - Luke Cage After Luke Cage and Jessica Jones shared the reality of super sex in the latter's Netflix show in 2015, the big guy returned with his own show in 2016 to prove that he's also capable of more tender, human-level sex with non-powered partners. And the results were no less fiery as he and Misty Knight ended there first meeting with a steamy sex scene all wrapped up in a delightfully nostalgic sepia filter. You just knew it was going to be magic as soon as she invited him for coffee only for both of them to admit they don't like coffee, before a lingering look and a smash-cut to them back at his apartment. The scene is lingering and just this side of animalistic as they explore one another, and you actually get a real sense of Cage's restrained power even in this most intimate moment. And the soundtrack is a beautiful throwback too, which feels very much like it consciously channels old porn conventions and exploitation flicks. 4. Claire And Jamie - Outlander You can see why Outlander has grown so much in popularity since it first appeared back in 2014: it combines irresistible fantasy elements with a historical setting, channelling Game Of Thrones' popularity in both tone and commitment to rampant sexuality. In comparison to the rip-roaring, baby-making shenanigans of the first season the second was a fairly muted affair, with far less sex scenes in light of Jamie being tortured and raped by Black Jack and feeling like less than a man. Eventually, after admitting his anxieties, he reconciled with Claire who took it upon herself to soothe his fears by seducing him in the middle of the night, challenging him to “Come find me, Jamie. Gretchen And Jimmy - You're The Worst You're The Worst has a quite wonderful knack for showing the honesty of human relationships, the strangeness and mundanity of being together played through a sometimes hilarious, sometimes excruciating picture of what it really is to be in a modern relationship. Season three opened in a frankly surprisingly intense way, with Gretchen and Jimmy caught in the act in the middle of the day, swapping instructions and orders and switching around positions with agility and passion. And then just as she's about to reach orgasm, she shouts her intentions and her refrain of "I'm gonna come!" has a quite astonishing response. Instead of ploughing on, as it were, Jimmy demands to know why she must always announce it, undercutting the moment and turning what was a vigorously sexy scene into something funny and clever and horribly awkward as they debate who has the floor at any one point. They eventually finish, warmly and sweetly, but the interruption is just a little bit of genius. 2. Bloody Hell - Penny Dreadful In the absence of True Blood, a certain segment of TV fans have missed their weekly ration of blood-soaked supernatural sex scenes with a decidedly adult rating. But Penny Dreadful has been doing her level best to fill in the gap, offering a slice of bloody raunch that is as memorable as it is odd. As the third season was kicking off properly, Justine slit her captor's throat before cathartically stabbing the daylights out of him, turning the scene into a bloody mess as Dorian and Lily watched on. This being Penny Dreadful, the murderous act turned out to be just the right sort of foreplay and the three quickly transform themselves into naked blood canvases and share a threeway sex scene that Dario Argento would be proud of. Presumably they just burnt the house down afterwards, because there's no way those stains are coming out. 1. The Golden Orgy - Westworld HBO love a sex scene, and it seems that the rules these days state that it has to be as raunchy as possible to get America's premier TV producer hot under the collar. That much should have been evident when the fifth episode of the stunning Westworld introduced us to the world of shiny robo sex parties in new area Pariah. The orgy, featuring naked bodies painted fully gold, was quite the spectacle, cutting a vivid, intoxicating picture of the true lack of limits the park offered to guests. It's impossible to ignore the show's use of Eyes Wide Shut and 120 Days Of Sodom as inspiration for the heady scene, which might be the most memorable of the entire season. They apparently sought to "create the best sex orgy you can imagine" and by God did they manage it... And it's almost enough to forget that these people are basically having sex with evolved iPhones.
