Manchester United scored an important away goal but were held to a disappointing 1-1 draw against Anderlecht in their Europa League quarterfinal first leg.
United enjoyed the better of the first half and took a deserved 36th-minute lead when Henrikh Mkhitaryan finished from a tight angle after Jesse Lingard’s shot was parried.
They had earlier gone close in the 17th minute when Lingard struck a post after Anderlecht goalkeeper Ruben failed to hold a Zlatan Ibrahimovic shot.
After starting the second half on the back foot United almost doubled their lead on 55 minutes when Mkhitaryan went close from Matteo Darmian’s cross after good work from Paul Pogba.
Substitute Marouane Fellaini, who was booed due to his past association with Standard Liege, forced a save from Ruben with a deflected shot in the 81st minute, and the goalkeeper was also on hand to deny Pogba moments later as United pushed for a late second.
But the late drama came at the other end as Leander Dendoncker scored a header with only four minutes left of normal time to give Anderlecht hope heading into the second leg at Old Trafford next week.
