11) Eric Djemba-Djemba (Cameroonian) Eric Djemba-Djemba is a Cameroonian football player. He was signed by Sir Alex Ferguson (£3.5 million) in 2003. There was a time when he had 10 4×4-drive cars and 30 different bank accounts. He was juggling between credits. He went bankrupt four years later after signing for Aston Villa in 2007. His agent Christophe Mongay said once that Eric was in such dire straits during his time as a £75,000-a-month football player at Old Trafford that he relied solely on his appearance and winning bonuses to get by. It would take four hours a day for his agent to work on his accounts. Currently he plays as a midfielder for Chennaiyin FC in the Indian Super League. This was because he became embroiled in a multi-million pound fraud after investing £50,000 in a spread betting foreign currency scheme. He and his wife invested £100,000 into the scam run by accountant Simon Grinter’s company. He went into bankruptcy in May 2014. 8) Carl Cort (Guyanese) Guyanese football player Carl Cort currently plays a forward for Tampa Bay Rowdies in the North American Soccer League. In 2010, this 37-year-old’s bank and credit card accounts were frozen by court order over unspecified debts. He is one of those football players who never really recovered from a big-money move that did not work out. According to many football experts, Cort has not been able to realize his potential. This bloated legend admits that he cannot live without a pint. He is hooked on a mix of valium and strong lager. He is broke and has appeared drunk in front of his fans on many occasions. He secured lucrative contracts during his career, including working as a model for Armani and H&M. 5) John Arne Riise (Norwegian) This former Liverpool player was earning £30,000 per week in 2007. In the same year he was declared bankrupt over debts of £100,000. This was due to poor business decisions. He sued his former agent Einer Baardsen over the way he had invested his money. He currently plays for Nicosia club APOEL in the Cypriot First Division. 4) Brad Friedel (American) This 43-year-old shiny-headed goalkeeper declared bankruptcy in January 2011 when a football academy he started in his hometown Ohio, ran up debts. The not-for-profit venture was set up to help youngsters in the US to adapt better to European football. From 2011 to 2012 he managed AL- Wasl FC, a Dubai based club which he made a reported amount of $2.7 million. 2) Celestine Babayaro (Nigerian) In spite of earning £25,000 per week during the peak of his career, this former Chelsea and Newcastle player was declared bankrupt at a court in Croydon in 2010; with confirmation in 2011. Despite all the reports, the former Nigeria international insisted he is not broke. 1) Lee Hendrie (British) Lee Hendrie was one of the most promising young English players of the late 1990s.
