15 slangs popularized by Nigerian musicians and their meanings

Terry G – Akpako Meaning anything that can be used to hit someone, it also relatively means to tell a huge lie. [Nack Apako]. Olamide – Baddo Baddo means someone who is extremely good at doing good/bad things. Olamide refers to himself as Baddo. Olamide – Sneh Olamide introduced this slang in his song titled ‘Lagos Boys’. Sneh is an unusual word not found in the regular parlance of most Nigerians. To stop people scratching their heads over its meaning, Olamide explained.

D’Prince – Jonze

Mavin Records’ D’Prince popularized the slang Jonze/Jonzing which means an excessive feeling of one’s self or actions.

Relatively used to describe when someone is high on alcohol or any other type of substance and doesn’t have proper control of his/her senses.

D’banj – Koko/Kokolette

D’banj didn’t invent the word Koko but invented Kokolette. Koko in yoruba means the important or main thing. While Kokolette on the other hand means a very solid young woman who is well endowed in all the right proportions.

Wizkid – Smellos

This slang was popularized when Olamide and Wizkid teamed up to work on a song. Wizkid used the word to diss HKN artist, Davido when they had some beef between them. Smellos is usually used to define someone below one’s level.

2Face Idibia – No Shaking

2Face Idibia popularized the slang ‘No Shaking’ which means there is no reason to panic or be worried at all.

Phyno – Alobam

Indigenous rapper, Phyno popularized the word ‘Alobam’. Alobam, an igbo phrase, is coined from the word ‘armed robber’. Now i know what youre thinking but calm down, thats not the meaning.

Figuratively speaking, it denotes someone you can go the extra mile with, your ride or die. It is like a code of conduct for people who don’t snitch on each other.

It is a street slang for your best friend who would have your back at all times.

Olamide – Shoro Niyen

‘Shoro Niyen’ literally means ‘Is that talk’ in Yoruba and is fondly used to reply when someone says something unacceptable or out of place.

Lil Kesh – Shoki

The slang Shoki became a craze in Nigeria when Lil Kesh introduced the song and the Shoki Dance style as well. Not like he invented the word Shoki or the dance itself, we know for sure Lil Kesh popularized it.

Shoki in Yoruba means brief. NBC banned the song ‘Shoki’ and explained that it meant ‘Quickie’.

Korede Bello – Na God Win

Not really a slang but the phrase ‘Na God Win’ is one of the most used phrase in Nigeria so far this year. It means that God wins in all things. The song God Win by Korede Bello popularized this slang and the song itself has been named one of the biggest songs of 2015.

Olamide – Turn Up

Olamide popularized the slang ‘Turn Up’ with the introduction of it in his single titled the same phrase. Turn Up means to show up at a party or where a celebration is meant to take place.

D’banj – No Long Tin

No Long Thing is the debut album by Nigerian recording artist D’banj. It was released by Mo’Hits Records in 2005.

Its used to say that everything will be fine, like if somebody has a problem and you want to make the person feel better about a situation.

Don Jazzy – Dorobucci

‘Dorobucci’ was invented by Don Jazzy when he released an all star song by all his Mavin Records label artists including Tiwa Savage, Dr. Sid, D’Prince, Di’ija, Korede Bello and Reekado Banks.

Singer, Dr Sid, has revealed that the song which made waves on the airwaves “Dorobucci” means a person or an individual that is awesome, amazing, rich, swagged-out, se’xy and buff. According to the dentist turned songwriter and singer, any word that qualifies greatness, that’s Dorobucci.
