4. Not all Letters are Innocent
In Boyds, Maryland, Quinton Thomas was being held in jail until his trial for murder and armored robbery. Now obviously, when you are in jail you need to do something to pass the time, so Quinton decided to write a nice friendly letter to one of his friends on the outside. In his letter, Mr. Thomas simply suggested to his friend that any of the witnesses who were planning to testify against him should be killed. Now this might not sound so bad from a criminal standpoint because letters going out of the jail are not screened; only letters coming into the jail are read before being sent to the inmate. Now the problem is somewhere along the line in addressing the envelope Mr. Thomas made a mistake, the letter was marked RETURN TO SENDER, which meant it was now considered incoming mail.
