1. Sofia Vergara
During the marriage of Sofia Vergara and Nick Loeb, the couple created two frozen embryos containing Loeb’s sperm and Vergara’s eggs. There was a specific contract drawn up stating, “any embryos created through the process could be brought to term only with both parties’ consent.” While this seems like an open-and-shut case, Loeb sued Vergara four months after the couple split, saying that the contract didn’t specify what exactly would happen to the embryos. After their divorce, Vergara wanted the embryos destroyed, and Loeb wanted to bring these embryos to life.
In May 2015, Loeb sued for custody of the embryos, and even wrote an op-ed piece entitled, “Our Frozen Embryos Have a Right to Live.” This case has sparked huge debate, since it brings up the fact that Vergara will be financially responsible for the embryos if they are brought to term. This is made even more complicated now that she is married to Joe Manganiello, and they are currently starting a family together.
