President Muhammadu Buhari has put an end to the issue of Biafra insisting that the country will not break-up.
Buhari’s administration has witnessed resurgence in the agitation for an independent Biafra state but the president has responded to the call saying the country was better an one.
In a statement by Garba Shehu who is the senior special assistant to the president on media and publicity, Buhari was quoted as saying focus should be on development.
The president made this comment on Thursday, December 1 while at a meeting with the Council of South-East Traditional Rulers at the State House.
He said: “The question of having another country out of Nigeria is going to be very difficult. From 1914, we have more than 200 cultures living with one another. God had endowed this country with natural resources and talented people. We should concentrate on these and be very productive.”
President Buhari promised that the south-east will also benefit from the new railway architecture being put in place by his administration.
On the issue of having more Igbos in the key positions in the country, Buhari said he was “very conscious of the sensitivities of the South East” which was why four of the five key cabinets were occupied from people from the region.
The president urged the Igbo elders to urge the people in the region to give his administration a chance and also applauded the good work of the ministers from the region in the federal government, saying that they are doing very well for the country.
President Buhari assured that the issue of cattle rustling and kidnapping would be his next focus as “we have managed to calm down the North-East.” On the issue of corruption, President Buhari noted that the judiciary needs cleansing as some trial dated back to when Chief Olusegun Obasanjo was president.
“We are asking the judiciary to clean itself. Nigerians are tired of waiting. They want some actions.”
His Royal Majesty, Eze (Dr) Eberechi N. Dick (JP) who is the chairman of the South East Council of Traditional Rulers made requests for roads other projects.
He also assured the president of their continued support for his administration.
