The Director General of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), Brig Gen YD Ahmed, has confirmed that the discharge certificate presented by Enugu State Governor-elect, Barr Peter Mbah, is fraudulent.
In an interview on Arise Television’s breakfast programme, Brig Gen Ahmed stated, “The certificate was fake, and I told him…I wonder how elites who have gone to school will resort to black market certificates.” He emphasized that the NYSC does not issue certificates in hotel rooms or houses.
Peter Mbah, who has reportedly filed a case against the NYSC, claiming N20 billion in damages, alleges that the controversies surrounding his discharge certificate have caused him harm.
However, the NYSC Director General stated that he is unaware of any lawsuit and will not respond to hearsay.
The controversy surrounding Mbah’s discharge certificate arose in February 2023 when the NYSC, in response to an inquiry by a non-governmental organization, stated that the certificate submitted to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) was not authentic. Another letter was issued in April 2023 by an Aba-based law firm, Silver & Co. Associates, further discrediting the certificate.
The widespread attention garnered by Peter Mbah’s NYSC discharge certificate highlights the possibility of public office holders holding positions with falsified qualifications. Mbah had obtained a court order restraining the NYSC and its personnel from commenting on the contentious certificate.
