The Nigeria Police Force has taken swift action by arresting and detaining the officers captured in a distressing viral video where they were seen brutally assaulting an Okada rider in Lagos.
The revelation came to light during a Twitter Space webinar organized by Premium Times, as confirmed by the Force spokesperson, Olumuyiwa Adejobi.
The disturbing incident, which unfolded in the Abule Egba area of Lagos State, depicted three policemen ruthlessly attacking the victim, identified as Al-Hassan Usman.
The viral footage captured one officer forcefully striking the Okada rider with his baton, while another aggressively pushed him away multiple times. The relentless struggle ensued as the injured man valiantly clung to his bike, blood streaming down his forehead from a severe injury.
Adding to the appalling scene, the third officer heartlessly rode away on the victim’s bike, leaving him in a state of shock and agony. The remaining two officers promptly departed the location in a tricycle, seemingly indifferent to the consequences of their reprehensible actions.
The incident, which occurred approximately four days ago, has sparked public outcry and calls for justice. However, crucial details surrounding the circumstances leading up to the brutal assault have yet to be fully ascertained.
“They have been detained, I’m saying it now. I got the video of the Abule Egba incident on my WhatsApp from the Inspector General of Police, Usman Baba, and when he sends material to me like that, I know what it means,” he said during the webinar.
He said the Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Idowu Owohunwa, had already detained the men without even waiting for any order, saying the CP, being a thoroughbred officer, knew what to do.
“We don’t waste time when our men misbehave,” Adejobi added.
According to him, the Lagos police spokesman, Benjamin Hundeyin, ought to have made their photos available to the public to confirm that the policemen had been detained, saying he was sure Hundeyin would do that any moment from now.
