Prof. Gregory Ibe, a member of the Worldwide Advisory Council, has appealed to President Muhammadu Buhari to heed the calls of numerous eminent Nigerians and release Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).
In a personal letter titled “Passionate Intercession For Compassionate Release of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu,” Ibe suggested that granting Kanu’s release could serve as a parting gift to Ndigbo and earn President Buhari a place in the Igbo Hall of Fame.
Ibe, the founder of Gregory University, Uturu, acknowledged the significant contributions made by the Igbo people towards Nigeria’s development.
However, he expressed concern that Kanu’s prolonged detention has deepened the disillusionment felt by the Igbo population, who question their value and treatment within the country.
The professor reminded President Buhari that releasing Kanu would foster national healing, reconciliation, and unity as Nigeria moves forward. He emphasized that it would contribute to building a stronger and prosperous Nigerian nation while addressing the growing unrest in certain regions of the country.
Ibe pointed out examples of individuals like Asari Dokubo, Government Tompolo, and Sunday Igboho, who, upon their release from detention, integrated back into society and actively promoted peace in their respective regions.
He urged President Buhari to follow suit and release Kanu, emphasizing that such a move would pave the way for peace to prevail in the South-East.
