A Sharia Court in Kano State has issued an order for a 25-year-old man named Aliyu Sa’ad to be remanded in a correctional center after he pleaded guilty to calling his friend gay.
The Judge, Malam Umar Lawal-Abubakar, made the decision based on Sa’ad’s guilty plea. The court has adjourned the case until July 3 for a summary trial.
According to the prosecution counsel, Insp Abdullahi Wada, the incident occurred on Monday around 8 p.m. when the defendant engaged in an altercation with the complainant, Malam Ahmed Khamis-Ahmed, and proceeded to use offensive language towards him. The prosecutor stated that this action is in violation of Section 188 of the Sharia law of Kano State.
