After what seems like an eternity of teasing, Samsung has finally revealed its flagship mobile device – the Galaxy S6, as well as a sibling with a curved-edge screen, the Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge. The reveal was made during a press conference at Mobile World Congress.

The S4 and S5 were great handsets in terms of their power and functionality but not in terms of their design. Has Samsung really managed to pull it out of the bag this time? Broadly-speaking it most certainly has, but it’s not without some compromises, notably in the battery and storage departments. Let’s look at the Galaxy S6 features in detail.
Galaxy S6 design
The big news is the design: the ‘standard’ Galaxy S6 is clad in a metal unibody that offers a higher-end finish than the recent A3, A5 and A7 Series, due to it adding Corning’s Gorilla Glass 4 to the front and back.
This has come from Samsung’s internal Project Zero, an aim to completely redesign the S6 from the ground up, bringing back metal over plastic (one side effect is that this phone isn’t water resistant, unlike the S5). One example of a will to make the S6 much better than the S5 can be seen with the home button, which has a good click action rather than being too soft as it was on the S5.
The S6 comes in four ‘translucent’ colours, while it’s only 6.8mm thick
Galaxy S6 display
Samsung’s high end handsets have always excelled in terms of screen technology. The S6 is no different, with Quad HD resolution (wowee) and a 5.1-inch display with Super AMOLED. If you’ve used an S5, you’ll know how great its screen is. This is even better. It’s crystal clear and sharp, while offering a high contrast ratio for brilliant whites and dark blacks. It’s also the sharpest on the market at the moment, according to Samsung, with 577ppi and an automatic super bright mode for outside use.
Galaxy S6, Android Lollipop and TouchWiz
Android Lollipop is in full effect but Samsung’s TouchWiz overlay is still on board, adding a more basic feel to things where the overlays from other brands still feel more premium, but Samsung has refined this again. There is less clutter and, in actual fact, we quite like the TouchWiz version of Lollipop we’ve been using on our older S5 for the last few weeks.
It’s great to hear that the interface has been a little simplified from the latest version available for the S5 as that was still a little too complicated with extra options as well as double-checking what you’re doing all the time.
Galaxy S6 specs and power
As well as that terrific screen you get a 64-bit octacore processor (which must be Samsung’s own Exynos version), 3GB of RAM and upgraded storage of between 32GB and 128GB.
Sadly the S6 range eschews a microSD card slot, meaning that you’ll have to shell out a great deal to get the capacity you want – it’s available in 32GB / 64GB / 128GB capacities (the latter will be EXPENSIVE). There’s also now NO removable battery. Both of these things are a real shame (especially the microSD), but it’s obvious they have been sacrificed for good reason. The former is designed to speed up the internal workings of the phone and the latter is to allow for a more sleek unibody design.
The other disappointment with the battery is that the smaller chassis means a 2550mAh pack has been preferred to the 2800mAh unit from the Galaxy S5. This again a disappointment – one of the things that was praised the most about the S5 was its great battery life. Because of the Quad HD screen and numerous other enhancements, surely this is a step back?
Galaxy S5 Camera
The camera remains at 16MP on the rear, with 5MP on the front, and both have upgraded low light abilities (f1.9 aperture) as well as Auto HDR. We hope the enhancements will have fixed the laggy camera on the S5, but we’re not holding out a tremendous amount of hope.
Samsung reckons this camera is 34 per cent (we know, it’s quite specific isn’t it?) better in low light than the camera on the S5.
Galaxy S6 vs S6 Edge: what’s the difference?
The Galaxy S6 Edge is different in that it has a ‘dual curve’ screen that bends down at the edges of the phone, giving new options for the display with tactile elements for hitting up your favourite contacts and control music without disturbing your main app.
Apart from the design both phones are largely identical; the S6 Edge comes in slightly thicker at 7mm – compared to 6.8mm on the S6 – and the curvier phone has a larger battery (2600mAh compared to 2550mAh).
Galaxy S6 price and release date
Samsung has said the Galaxy S6 release date is April 10th. Expect to pay something close to the iPhone 6 levels for the phone and more for the S6 Edge.
