Barcelona to Real Madrid – €62-million (2002)
Luis Figo’s transfer from Barcelona to Real Madrid signified the start of the Galactico era at the Bernabeu. Signed for a world record fee at the time, Figo’s departure incensed the Barcelona faithful, who threw a pig’s head onto the pitch during one of his subsequent returns to the Camp Nou. During his time at the club he won the Ballon d’Or and FIFA World Player of the Year, as the team twice won La Liga and the 2002 Champions League. He left in the club in summer 2005 on a free transfer to Internazionale; perhaps fittingly this signalled the end of the Galactico era. He is currently one of the candidates in the 2015 election to become FIFA President, with the aim to rehabilitate football’s image.
