That all the places on this list are taken by either of the Clasico sides should come as no surprise, as it is dominated by players who have been signed since the turn of the millennium and who have all had an enormous impact on the way the league is fought and played. 10) Luka Modric Tottenham Hotspur to Real Madrid – €41.6-million (2012)

Narrowly beating Karim Benzema’s transfer to the Bernabeu from this list, Modric initially struggled following his transfer to Real Madrid. During his first season he was in-and-out of the Madrid starting line-up under Jose Mourinho. After Carlo Ancelotti’s appointment Modric became one of the first names in the team and was vital in the club finally claiming ‘la Décima’ in the Champions League final against Atletico Madrid. Before injury and weight issues blighted the end of his Madrid career Ronaldo was the undisputed best striker on the planet. One of the capital-club’s original Galacticos, in his first season Ronaldo scored 30-goals in all competitions as the team won the 2002-3 La Liga title. This would be the first and last major title for Real Madrid as the Galacticos experiment would fall apart after the departure of manager, Vincente Del Bosque, and a number of the club’s less glamorous players. Luis Figo’s transfer from Barcelona to Real Madrid signified the start of the Galactico era at the Bernabeu. Signed for a world record fee at the time, Figo’s departure incensed the Barcelona faithful, who threw a pig’s head onto the pitch during one of his subsequent returns to the Camp Nou. During his time at the club he won the Ballon d’Or and FIFA World Player of the Year, as the team twice won La Liga and the 2002 Champions League. The first of these was to be Kaka who signed a six-year contract at Real Madrid on the 9th June 2009, although his transfer was eclipsed two days later by the signing of Cristiano Ronaldo from Manchester United. Kaka’s signing still captured the imagination of the Real Madrid fans as it had won FIFA World Player of the Year just two years previously. Ultimately, Kaka’s time at Real Madrid would prove to be a disappointment as he struggled with both injuries and form. Zlatan Ibrahimovic’s transfer to Barcelona was doomed to fail from the very beginning. Perhaps the most baffling part of this transfer was the valuation of Samuel Eto’o at only €20-million, a player who had been instrumental in Barcelona’s continental domination. This culminated with the Swede being sent on loan to AC Milan, who a season later signed him for only €24-million, representing a big loss for Barcelona in their initial outlay. 5) Zinedine Zidane Juventus to Real Madrid – €75-million (2001)

Zidane is another member of Real Madrid’s original Galacticos and one of the most recognisable footballers on the planet. Real Madrid spent a world record €75-million to bring Zidane to the Bernabeu in 2001. Any Madrid fan would tell you the fee was worth it alone for his wonder goal that won them the 2002 Champions League final against Bayer Leverkusen. During his time at Madrid Zidane was named FIFA World Player of the Year for the third time in 2003 and a year later was voted UEFA Best European Player of the Past 50 Years. James Rodriguez is the most recent addition to Real Madrid’s new Galacticos project. The delay in the starting date of Barcelona’s transfer ban meant they were able to smash their previous club record to sign Luis Suarez from Liverpool. Suarez transfer to the Catalan club looked in doubt following his bite on Giorgio Chiellini during the 2014 World Cup; however the Catalan club pursued the transfer regardless of the negative press Suarez had gained. Suarez had been central to Liverpool’s Premier League title challenge that season, scoring 31-goals in 33-league appearances. His bite on Chiellini meant he was banned from playing for Barcelona until the 25th October 2014, making his debut in Barcelona’s 3-1 El Clasico defeat.
