7. From Hell
In 1888, Jack the Ripper prowled the foggy streets of Whitechapel, mutilating women and leaving the entire city of London in a state of panic. For more than a century ‘Ripperologists’ have tried (and failed) to solve the case, but with over 200 suspects, it’s unlikely to ever happen. The Royal Conspiracy is one of the most famous theories — although most experts will agree that it’s ludicrous — and formed the basis of From Hell. While the real Inspector Abberline, wasn’t a drug-taking psychic with a cockney accent,Johnny Depp’s portrayal inspired many armchair detectives to take up the case; most notably, Russel Edwards, who recently claimed to have identified the culprit using mitochondrial DNA.
