And sure enough, Sheen kept to the script and acknowledged that he was HIV positive and had been for four years. “I’m here to admit that I am in fact HIV positive,” Sheen said. “It’s a hard three letters to absorb. It’s a turning point in one’s life.” It’s also, as it turns out, been a costly exercise keeping his secret at bay, with Sheen admitting to paying “upwards of 10 million dollars” to people who blackmailed him about releasing information relating to his health and says that by coming clean about his HIV, he is now released from a self-imposed prison of treason by those who betrayed his trust.

While the 50-year-old was frank about the disease, he admitted that he was “not entirely” sure how he contracted the virus. But given his hell-raising antics and drug-fueled binges, plus the sordid company he keeps, it wasn’t exactly earth-shattering news that his hedonist lifestyle finally caught up with him. The Hollywood hell-raiser is no stranger to trouble, which has seen him snare column inches after column inches.

12. Hospitalized After Using $20,000 Worth Of Drugs

Sheen landed in the emergency room in Janaury 2011 (his third “health” scare in the space of three months) after he reportedly partied all night with adult film star Kacey Jordan, two other women and a “briefcase full of cocaine” before he was rushed to the hospital after complaining of severe abdominal pains, according to CBS News. Sheen Had Unprotected Sex While HIV Positive During his far-reaching interview with Matt Lauer On Nov. 17, 2015, Sheen admitted he had had unprotected sex since learning he was HIV positive – but he says it was only with two people and they were absolutely informed of his status. Turned Up Inebriated To Pick Up His Twins Sheen and his ex Brooke Mueller got into a vicious custody battle over their twin sons, Max and Bob in 2014, with Mueller accusing Sheen of, among other things, drunken visitations. She was further mortified when Sheen revealed in a 20/20 interview that he was raising their twin boys with his two live-in girlfriends, which lead Mueller to have the police remove them from Sheen’s home. He hit back and claimed that the twins were born fetal alcohol syndrome, due to Mueller’s own drinking. The pair eventually agreed to monitored visitations. 9. Accused Of Assaulting Dental Technician In March 2014, a simple trip to the dentist went terribly wrong for Charlie Sheen. According to papers filed in a lawsuit by Margarita Palestino, a Los Angeles dental technician, Sheen committed assault, battery, sexual battery and intentional infliction of emotional distress on Sept. 25, when he sought treatment. People Magazine reported on the filings that Palestino was assisting Dr. George Bogen and Dr. Jaime Azdair in an examination room when suddenly Sheen became violent. He allegedly ripped off the nitrous oxide mask and shouted, “I’m going to f–––ing kill you!” He also allegedly tried to fondle her breasts. 8. Allegedly Told Denise Richards To Get Cancer And Rot In Hell This went down as one of the nastiest divorces in Hollywood history. On April 19, 2006, Denise Richards filed for divorce from Sheen claiming he was addicted to prostitutes and gambling – and even more shocking, underage porn. Richards was also forced to get a restraining order, saying Sheen attacked her at their home in 2005. A few days later, he released a statement, which read: “Obviously, what has taken place is vile, is unconscionable, is without merit, is a transparent and immature smear campaign. She’s claiming certain things. It’s baseless.” The pair’s divorce was finalized in November 2006 and in 2009, Sheen gave Richards full custody of their children, Sam and Lola. Allegedly Threatened To Kill Brooke Mueller It wasn’t a very merry Christmas for Charlie Sheen in 2009 after he was arrested and charged with the second-degree crimes of assault and menacing against his then-wife Brooke Mueller. Sheen, who was the highest-paid television actor in America at the time, was also charged with criminal mischief. According to reports, Sheen allegedly became angry when Mueller started drinking at their rented house in Aspen, Colorado. A row ensued and Sheen reportedly grabbed her throat. Mueller told police that he threatened to kill her saying: “You better be in fear. If you tell anybody, I’ll kill you.” Sheen spent eight hours behind bars at Pitkin County Jail. 6. Knocked Girlfriend Unconscious In 1997, Brittany Ashland filed a lawsuit “claiming that on Dec. 20, 1996, Sheen grabbed her by the hair and slammed her onto the marble floor of his Agoura Hills home,” according to CBS News. As a result, she was knocked unconscious and her lip was split so badly that she required seven stitches. If that wasn’t bad enough, he also allegedly forced her to take off her bloody clothes and threatened to kill her if she uttered a word about the incident. “The suit charged the actor with assault, battery, negligence, false imprisonment and emotional distress and asked for unspecified damages,” according to CBS News. At his sentencing, Sheen reportedly told the judge: “I feel this is very fair, and I’m grateful… you will not see me back in this courtroom.” 5. Allegedly Shot Then Fiancée Kelly Preston In The Arm Way back in 1990, Sheen and actress/model Kelly Preston were Tinseltown’s hot couple, until he allegedly accidentally shot her in the arm. The injury was only minor, requiring stitches, but it did prompt her to call off their engagement. His version of events? She actually shot herself. “I was downstairs early in the morning making coffee and I thought she was still asleep upstairs,” he said. “And I heard a f–king gunshot go off. I thought, ‘She did it, she finally f–king did it. She killed herself and they’re going to f–king blame me.'” 4. Anderson said she became very afraid of the actor. He later admitted to doing coke and agreed to pay the $7,000 in damages.
