Chris Rock’s Brutally Honest Oscars Monologue It’s December already, and many of us may not even remember which movie won the Oscar for Best Picture, but even years from now, people will still remember the show host’s (Chris Rock) legendary monologue in regards to #OscarsSoWhite– a movement to go against the underrepresentation of people of color in the annual movie awards. His speech was sharp, sarcastic, and purposefully intended to make some people uncomfortable. “Jada [Pinkett] boycotting the Oscars is like me boycotting Rihanna’s panties,” Rock said. “You were not invited!” And further, he suggested that “if you want black people every year at the Oscars, you have to have black categories, like Best Black Friend.” The most played joke on Twitter for weeks in a row was, “Is Hollywood racist? Damn right, it’s racist, but it’s sorority racist. It’s like, ‘We like you, Rhonda, but you’re not Kappa.’ Of course, the comedian couldn’t solve racism with his 15-minute dialogue, but he definitely made a point! 11. The Taylor & Kanye Feud It started seven years ago when nobody expected that a seemingly innocent incident would lead to what is now a long-running feud between the two artists. They first came into contact on the stage of the 2009 MTV Video Music Awards when the rapper hijacked the mike from Taylor Swift during her acceptance speech and said that Beyoncé’s video was far better than the one for which Swift got the award. This year, more fuel was added to the fire when Kim Kardashian snapchatted a taped conversation between her man and Swift, in which the latter gives her consent about the following line in Kanye’s song Famous , “For all my Southside niggas that know me best/ I feel like me and Taylor might still have sex.” When the song was released in February, the line in question ended with “I made that bitch famous.” The “bitch” couldn’t stomach the insult and publically condemned people who “try to undercut your success.” Nobody knows for sure what exactly happened in the months between the release of the controversial song and the Snapchat reveal, and this gave people more material for speculation about the chain of events that led to this complicated beef between the two celebs. 10. Justin Bieber And Selena Gomez’s Instagram Battle Throughout the whole summer, Justin had been teasing his female fans big time by showing up together with his new girlfriend, Sofia Richie, and posting tons of selfies of them while travelling the world. Everything seemed to be rosy until one day he threatens he’ll delete his profile if his fans don’t stop making vicious comments about their relationship. Bieber behaving like a spoilt pop star who’s used to always being admired wouldn’t have been such big news if it wasn’t for his ex, Selena Gomez. She couldn’t hold her horses and made the situation escalate, commenting, “If you can’t handle the hate, then stop posting pictures of your girlfriend lol.” Her comment made Bieber show his teeth, and he replied maliciously that it’s funny to see people who used him for attention to point the finger that way. That was a low blow, and Gomez immediately fired back, “Funny how the ones who cheated multiple times, are pointing the finger at the ones that were forgiving and supportive, no wonder fans are mad. Sad.” With the ball in his court, Bieber fought fire with fire, “I cheated… oh, I forgot about you and Zayn?” We mean, seriously, have you recently watched a better reality comedy series? 9. Taylor Swift And Calvin Harris’ Breakup Oh yes, it’s been a particularly tough year for Taylor! Not only did she have to fight Kanye and Kim over the “bitch” line in the rapper’s song Famous , but she was also taking blows from her ex-beau, Calvin Harris, whom she broke up with at the beginning of summer. First, People confirmed that it was actually Swift who wrote Rihanna’s hit This Is What You Came For under a pseudonym. Then Harris responded in now-deleted tweets that it was all tall tale, as he wrote the music, produced the song, arranged it, and cut the vocals through. Taylor wanted to keep that secret, and that’s why she came up with the pseudonym thing. “Hurtful to me, he said, that she and her team would go so far out of their way to make ME look bad.” As the passions were running high, Harris wouldn’t stop there. In their Twitter war, he brought up also Swift’s new boyfriend and the long-going conflict she has with Katy Perry. Amber Heard Divorcing Johnny Depp After Domestic Violence Accusations And for so many years we thought Johnny was a sweet, sweet man, absolutely incapable of violence of any sort… What a delusion! In August, the couple settled both their divorce and the domestic abuse case, thus putting an end to one of Hollywood’s ugliest break-ups ever. Earlier this year, Heard filed for divorce and obtained a restraining order on the premise of alleged domestic abuse after a drunken argument in their LA apartment. In her filing, she claimed that Depp freaked over something and became extremely angry, threw a phone at her and hit her in the cheek and eye “with extreme force.” A friend of Heard’s who witnessed the scene supported her version, and added that during the argument, Depp was swinging a bottle of wine “like a baseball bat.” In his defense, Depp’s lawyers maintained that their client acted that way for a logical reason. He thought his wife was having an affair with Billy Bob Thornton, although both Thornton and Heard had denied any intimacy between them. The worse outcome of the whole divorce, however, was the fact that the domestic abuse claims presented a serious problem for Dior, which uses Depp’s image with rolled-up sleeves for their advertising campaign for a perfume ironically named Sauvage. 7. Casey Affleck Accused Of Harassment When he was still just the younger brother of Ben Affleck, nobody cared that much about him. But now, with Casey Affleck’s career skyrocketing in the past few years, many have been trying to steal a piece of his fame and riches. The increased media attention drawn by the abundance of awards he received this season has brought up some disturbing things from his past. In 2010, two women Affleck worked with during the making of I’m Still Here (2008) accused him of sexual harassment. One of the plaintiffs, the producer Amanda White, claimed that Affleck boasted to her about his sexual conquests and once instructed another crew member to show White his penis despite her objections. Both women filed separate suits for a total of $ 4.5 million, alleging that the actor verbally and physically abused them. Although Affleck denied the allegations and later settled both cases out of court for an undisclosed sum, the allegations resurfaced amidst his Oscar campaign, thus sabotaging his chances for winning the Best Actor Award for his performance in Manchester by the Sea . 6. Rob Kardashian And Blac Chyna’s Relationship If the Kardashians weren’t around, what would people really talk about? The baby brother of Kourtney, Kim, and Khloé has been engaged to the model and entrepreneur Blac Chyna since April this year. Their daughter Dream Renee was born in November and despite the parents’ excitement and happiness over the new arrival in the Kardashian family, people who’ve been following their relationship since February know that it has been surrounded by as much drama as both could handle. First, there were rumors that the feud between Kylie and Chyna over Tyga wasn’t over. The Kardashian family was worried that Chyna was using Rob to distress Kylie, and that she’s only playing with the little brother’s head. They were also concerned she had no feelings for him, but was only after his money. Kylie was indeed so furious at Rob when he started dating her rival Chyna that she even posted a picture comparing Rob with the devil. In July, Rob got rid of all traces of his relationship with Chyna on his Instagram account, and in addition unfollowed his fiancée. The reason behind the blow-up between the two became known a month later when the first episode of documentary series about the couple was aired. It showed Chyna yelling, “Are you still texting bitches?” into her phone. It seems things are going pretty well for the freshly baked parents now, and we can only wish Santa will bring them more trust and less family interference during the new year. 5. Justin Bieber’s Reckless Behavior Towards His Fans More and more fans of the young superstar seem to get disappointed either because of their idol’s lousy live performances, or because of his sometimes arrogant attitude towards them. We still remember how he walked off the stage at Oslo’s Chateau Neuf concert hall before hundreds of screaming fans last October. The Canadian stopped the concert after one only song because “the people in the front row wouldn’t listen,“ as he wrote in his Instagram. A year later, the 22-year-old singer again stirs the pot by getting involved in a fan-punching incident. After a concert in Barcelona in November, Bieber was in the backseat of a car when an 18-year-old fan ran up to the vehicle and stuck his hand inside the window in his attempt to touch the singer. From the video which captured the scene, it becomes clear that Bieber doesn’t say a word, but instead punches the guy straight into the face. As a result, the fan gets a bleeding nose and Bieber gets to explain again his actions, given this was not his first flash of violent temper– a couple of years ago he hit a paparazzo in Paris. Our advice: Get some anger management classes, dude! 4. Mark Salling Indicted For Child Abuse We sure were shocked when in May the actor who played Puck in Glee was indicted on charges of receiving and possessing child pornography. He was arrested in December last year after federal agents seized a laptop, a hard drive and a flash drive containing images and videos of sexual content depicting girls, some younger than 12 years old. Shortly after the arrest, however, he was released on bail of $100, 000. “These images are not just pornographic photographs, they are child abuse,“ said the commander of the LAPD Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force. The 33-year-old actor was due to go to trial in July but the case was delayed. Only a couple of months later, in October, the already disgraced star was again accused, this time of raping a 22-year-old woman. According to the victim, the assault happened four years ago. She said she had been dating the actor for some months when one evening they went to the bedroom with the intention to have sex. She changed her mind, however, Salling still forced himself on her. 3. M. Night Shyamalan Claims Credit For She’s All That Do you remember the 1999 movie She’s All That ? The movie tells the story of a high school jock who makes a bet that he can turn an unattractive girl into a prom queen. Well, it’s not a disaster if you don’t remember it because it was just another average-rated comedy-slash-romance movie. But then, completely out of the blue, the box-office breaking Indian-American director M. Night Shyamalan comes out and makes an astonishing announcement that he wrote the movie. The reason his name was never credited was because he was hired as a ghostwriter. The legitimate writer of the script, R. Lee Fleming, took the news calmly and replied that Shyamalan’s claims were absurd and he might have written the script, but only in his mind. As a result of this clash of interests, some investigation was done, which eventually revealed that both men were actually right. Fleming’s script was bought by the studio, but Shyamalan was hired at a later stage to do the rewrite, so it was his version which made it to the screen. As Shakespeare would have put it, all’s well that ends well. 2. Brad Pitt And Angelina Jolie’s Divorce In September, it was all over the news– the most charismatic and glamorous couple in the world was getting divorced. The world was in shock and grief. People just didn’t want to believe it. But it was all real and happening. After 12 years together, though only married for two, on September 19, Angelina filed for divorce. Her very first comments on that decision were evasive; she said she did it “for the health of the family” and asked that they be given some privacy. Initially, both spouses and their lawyers kept silent about the motives behind the separation, which gave grounds to many speculations. Reports at that point claimed a variety of reasons, from “irreconcilable differences” to Pitt’s “bad parenting”, and his alleged affair with the French actress Marion Cotillard. Everybody was wondering how the couple would “divide” the children and the colossal wealth of $387 million. However, nobody was prepared for what was to come. 1. Brad Pitt Child Abuse Allegations If anybody was thinking the divorce between Brad and Angelina would go smoothly and they’d live happily ever after, only separately, was totally wrong. Shortly after Jolie filed the divorce papers, her ex-husband-to-be was accused of being verbally and physically abusive towards the children on the grounds of a recent incident involving their eldest son, Madox. The case was referred to FBI due to the fact that the incident happened in the air while the family was flying back on their private jet from France. Later, the investigation into Pitt’s alleged child abuse expanded to all the kids in the family and also to Angelina. As the tension around Brad was accumulating, the actress sensed it was the right moment for her to seek sole custody of the kids. Fortunately for Pitt, in November, he was cleared by the LA County Department of Child and Family Services. The custody battle between the ex-spouses, however, still rages on. Currently, Jolie is reported to be “hiding out” with the kids in a secluded Bel Air hotel. This is not a surprise, as she’s been trying for quite some time to avoid the spotlight.
