He's Not Fully Self-Aware Lionel Cironneau/AP The Yeezer has been known to not only talk about himself in the third person, but acknowledge and defend it too. He says it's because he is a brand in himself, but many think that it is indicative of narcissism and egocentrism. Sounds likely, but there could be a third explanation. The thing is about humans, is that we tend to develop our self-awareness in a 1-2-3 way. In the beginning, we think and talk in the first person (I/me), then in the second person (you/we) and finally we begin to fully comprehend the concept of other people as separate entities, even in the abstract (they/them). Artificial intelligence, however, almost seems to do this the other way around. Self-awareness is one of the holy grails of AI, but is very difficult to achieve. This lack of self awareness leads to systems referring to themselves in the third person - think "Windows is shutting down...". Back in 2011, scientists at the University of Texas-Austin developed an artificial intelligence called DISCERN. It was a neural network that was made to mimic the human mind in an attempt to better understand schizophrenia. As they fed it different data, words and events, the computer got so confused that it began exclusively referring to itself in the third person, and even claimed responsibility for a terrorist attack at one point due to its inability to properly differentiate between itself and abstract entities.. 6. He Appears Emotionally Pre-Programmed Giphy Don't know about you, but for me one of the most unnerving things about Kanye is the disconnect between his apparent emotional range (see: the endless Twitter rants) and his ability to physically express it. Sad Kanye might be one of the greatest works of our age, but it also might be indicative of something much more practical. Facial expressions are notoriously difficult to nail, particularly when it comes to robotics, and smiles are especially tricky. The trouble is that, the more realistic you try to make a human likeness, the more likely it is to fall into the uncanny valley, rendering it more creepy than cool. Sad Kanye is an elegant solution to this problem. The neutral, dead-eyed stare is much easier to render convincingly in both animatronics and animation. On the odd occasion Yeezy does crack a smile, it often looks a little forced to say the least and the rapid movement between expressions (as pictured above) indicates that they are the result of motors rather than emotions. In fact, it's more than a little reminiscent of this creepy animatronic face rolling through its "expressions" programming. 5. You Can't Explain His Popularity Without An Argument For Design memegenerator Much like a creationist would argue that the universe is simply works too perfectly to not have been intelligently designed, Kanye West's meteoric rise can not merely be a series of natural coincidences. The man is many things, good and bad, but most of all he is very "of his time". The rise of the internet, particularly the phenomenon of of viral "memes", has coincided almost perfectly with Kanye's rise to fame and increasing eccentricity. Yeezy is almost made for the internet and his entire modus operandi - incoherent, abstract, bizarre and yet consistent - is the actual embodiment of meme culture. You know, if I was going to design a social experiment, perhaps to test the limits of viral marketing, the power of PR and the cult of personality in modern society, it would look exactly like Kanye West. 4. He Literally Talks Like An AI FFS Twitter Maybe it has something to do with his self proclaimed creative genius, but Kanye's speech patterns are a little odd. Odd enough, in fact, to have come to the attention of some psychologists. One place where this is particularly evident, is his Twitter feed. When he's not actively selling something on there (perhaps in an attempt to fund his software upgrades?), his stream-of-consciousness style Twittering actually bears a striking resemblance to the Twitter accounts of AI bots - yes, including the one that learnt to be racist and abusive in a matter of hours - and other pieces of smart software that are trying to get a grip on language. That AI account was designed to learn from its interactions with other users. Other attempts at developing conversation robots have been feeding their AI people's Facebook feeds and even romance novels, but the effect is the same. One psychologist remarked that Yeezus "uses random words or catchphrases of words he’s spooled together, typically a mix of highbrow and lowbrow, and assumes that there is meaning to be had." This is remarkably similar to how AI learns to talk, and the briefest stroll through his Twitter, or even a collection of his most batsh*t quotes, is very convincing of this. 3. He’s Building An Army (Probably) Def Jam So, the now infamous "Famous" video. Clever PR stunt, or clue to Kanye's true nature? Probably the former, but let's go with it. We've talked a little bit about the uncanny valley, and how difficult it is to convincingly mimic a human likeness. But, as our robotics technology advances, we are able to pull ourselves out of the other side of the valley. Rest assured, the hyper-real robots are coming. Yeezy's provocative use of hyper-real waxworks of various celebrities just goes to show that, whoever is orchestrating the Kanye conspiracy, clearly has access to some serious artistic talent when it comes to building realistic humans models. 2. Creative AI Has Developed Sufficiently To Pull It Off Wikipedia One major question you might (rightly) ask is, why? Why would somebody bother to create a fake "rapper" and self-proclaimed second coming of the artistic world? The answer is progress. The Kanye Project fits perfectly in the context of our technological journey. In our continuing research into artificial intelligence, there are lots of different areas that we have to develop - self awareness is one of them, but creativity is another. By now, we can create computers that are able to perform a million calculations a second, and robots with the ability to lift several tonnes, but it is only more recently that we've been getting them into the arts. Google recently sat their AI chatbot down with a few thousand books, including 3,000 steamy romance novels, and it began to write poetry so melancholic as to rival a first-year english lit major. A different AI is even claimed to have passed the Turing Test with its poetry, after having it published in a literary journal as a human work. Another computer has also painted a masterpiece in the style of Rembrandt, so if our computers are getting into poetry and fine art, why not music? Speaking of the Turing Test, we come to the second "why" of the KanyeBot. What better way to see if your artificial intelligence is convincing enough, than unleashing it on an unsuspecting public? He might be a bit odd, but the fact that you think he's real could be exactly the breakthrough his creators were hoping for. 1. Kim Kardashian Is The Only Person On The Planet Who Could Live With Him And Not Notice E! It is truly a mystery of the age: What do two people as self-absorbed as Kim and Kanye talk about? Whilst I don't actually have any solid scientific data to back this one up, we can only look at the evidence. If you had to select one person on the planet that would be too busy taking bathroom selfies to notice that their husband powers down and plugs himself into the wall at night, it'd be Kim K. That said, there is also an argument to be made for her being part of the project. Remember our discussion about Kanye's speech patterns?
