The last time I came across people living and battling with this deadly disease, it wasn’t a good sight I must confess. And to make it worse, the treatment which seems to be the only alternative does more harm than good.
The question that keeps tugging at the sleeve of my mind is: Is it really worth it? Have you ever imagined using death as the remedy to death. That’s how bad it is!
Well, it is important to have a clear-cut understanding about this life-threatening disease.
Cancer is an abnormal growth of cells. Cancer is when abnormal cells divide in an uncontrolled way. Some cancers may eventually spread into other tissues.
Symptoms vary depending on the type. However, possible signs and symptoms include a lump, abnormal bleeding, prolonged cough, unexplained weight loss, and a change in bowel movements. While these symptoms may indicate cancer, they may have other causes.
Causes
According to research, tobacco use is
the cause of about 22% of cancer deaths. Another 10% are due to obesity, poor diet, lack of physical activity, and excessive drinking of alcohol. Other factors include certain infections, exposure to ionizing radiation and environmental pollutants. In the developing world nearly 20% of cancers are due to infections such as hepatitis B, hepatitis C and human papilloma virus infection.
These factors act, at least partly, by changing the genes of a cell. Typically many genetic changes are required before cancer develops. Approximately 5–10% of cancers are due to inherited genetic defects from a person’s parents.
A primary tumour is the name for where a cancer starts. Cancer starts when gene changes make one cell or a few cells begin to grow and multiply too much.
This may cause a growth called a tumour.
Cancer can sometimes spread to other parts of the body – this is called a secondary tumour or a metastasis. Most cancers start due to gene changes that happen over a person’s lifetime. More rarely cancers start due to inherited faulty genes passed down in families.
There are more than 100 types of cancer, including breast cancer, skin cancer, lung cancer, colon cancer, prostate cancer, and lymphoma.
Cancers are divided into groups according to the type of cell they start from. They include:
Carcinomas
Lymphomas
Leukaemias
Brain tumours
Sarcomas
Staging and grading give an idea of how quickly a cancer may grow and which treatments may work best. The stage of a cancer means how big it is and whether it has spread. Grading looks at how abnormal the cancer cells are.
Many cancers can be prevented by not smoking, maintaining a healthy weight, not drinking too much alcohol, eating plenty of vegetables, fruits and whole grains, vaccination against certain infectious diseases, not eating too much processed and red meat, and avoiding too much sunlight exposure. Early detection through screening is useful for cervical and colorectal cancer.
Cancer treatment may include chemotherapy, radiation, and/or surgery. Many cancers are cured. But in some people, cancer can return. Some cancers can’t be cured but treatment is often able to control them for some years.
However, cancer and its treatments as outlined above can affect body systems, such as the
blood circulation, lymphatic and immune systems, and the hormone system because the treatment processes basically works by damaging the DNA of cancerous tissue leading to cellular death.
Hence, cells which bring about the growth of various features such as hairs and fingernails, fail to function.
Remember that cells are the basic structural and functional units of life. Hence, it is the combination of cells that make basic features work in the human body. But the abnormal growth of them is what is called cancer. Now the treatments of cancer entails killing of every growing cell in the body (both normal and abnormal); and consequently, more damages are made to the body.
But, the good news is that cancer can be treated without having to go through the cell-killing treatment procedures. It’s a good thing to know that cancer can be treated naturally. These medicines have been discovered to naturally melt cancerous cells.
