A Nigerian man has sparked debate online after criticizing Nigerians for celebrating their national team’s victory in the AFCON semi-finals.
Recall that Nigeria secured a spot in the AFCON finals after defeating South Africa on penalties.
This victory fueled jubilant celebrations across the country, with many Nigerians expressing their pride and excitement on social media.
Taking to Twitter, a man identified as Hollazy7 argued that Nigerians should not be celebrating what he considers a minor achievement given the country’s current challenges.
“Why are you celebrating ordinary AFCON semi final as if we won the World Cup?” he wrote. “Even if we win the Cup, what’s your benefit? The country is not smiling, I don’t see any reason to be happy or celebrate anything! Stop the suffering & smiling. Let’s be mature!”
His tweet has garnered mixed reactions, with some Nigerians agreeing with his sentiment.
Others, however, defend the celebrations, emphasizing their importance for national unity, morale, and a sense of community.
