4. Hostel (2005)
Sometimes the scariest movies are those that make you think Oh my God, this could actually happen. Before the Saw franchise took off, horror movies that had a basis in reality free from supernatural evil were scarce, which is why films like Saw and Hostel did very well and gained a large cult following.

Hostel is a movie that is genuinely frightening because it has no need for a supernatural force to terrorize humanity; it is a film that shows humanity is evil enough on its own. In Hostel, two males in their 20’s visit Amsterdam hoping to indulge in the sinful pleasure that the nearly-lawless city has to offer. They meet two beautiful young woman who share a room with them at a certain hostel they’re staying at. The next night they are drugged by the women and are taken to an abandoned warehouse where they are tortured by sadistic men who pay a handsome fee to torture and kill unsuspecting tourists.
The film doesn’t leave much room for imagination, as the torture scenes are shown in their full brutality from the slicing of Achilles Tendons, to the torching of eyeballs, or even little children caving in a man’s skull, Hostel can make even those with the strongest stomachs queasy. While the movie was a success, it’s hard to imagine anyone booking a flight to Amsterdam after watching this brutal house of horror.
