6. His First Week in America Arnold Crashed a Pontiac GTO
Arnold arrived in the U.S. in 1968 to fulfill his American dreams. But they could have come crashing to a halt. Literally. On a misty October morning Arnold was tooling around the streets of L.A. in an Pontiac GTO he’d borrowed from a fellow body builder. At this time Arnold was in the States as a protege of Joe Weider, the man behind Muscle and Fitness magazine. Arnold was there to learn the ropes of American body-building but got a lesson in traffic safety (and how slippery the roads get in L.A. when it rains) first. “The car spun wildly around two or three times, completely out of control,” Arnold remembers, “I was probably down to about thirty miles per hour when momentum took me into the oncoming lanes – which were, unfortunately, very busy with morning traffic.”
He got t-boned by a Volkswagen Beetle and then slammed into another car. A chunk of the dashboard pierced his thigh. Limping up the street to Gold’s Gym (his destination) he got help, and luckily, not hauled off by the cops.
