There is just something about someone famous getting into some minor (or slight more major) trouble that appeals to the public.

Why do so many celebs go off the rails? Is the stress of fame that difficult to handle? Is the sudden appearance of money that much to deal with? Whatever the cause for these celebs to get into problems or trouble, one thing is clear: sometimes money makes you do (really) stupid things.

10. Justin Bieber

It probably seems like a cliche to have Justin Bieber on this list, since he has landed on similar ones in the past. Plus, the young singer really does appear to have his life back on the right track, and that has to be taken into consideration. But no one can deny that his past exploits weren’t exactly the actions of someone who has their life together, and it probably was because he got so rich so fast and just did not know how to handle it. Hopefully there won’t be any more run-ins with the law (or any other public urination) in the Bieber’s near future.

9. Britney Spears

We have to hand it to Britney Spears; for a while, it really looked as if she completely lost her mind and would never get it back. Shaving her head, run-ins with the paparazzi, getting snapped without undies and driving recklessly while her children were with her; it just seemed like the madness would never end. The kicker: that bizarre VMA performance that was supposed to serve as her comeback; the one where she seemed so out of it that no one in the audience knew what was going on.

But eventually, Britney pulled it all together and got her life back, and even established herself as a top act in Vegas. It just goes to show that if you put in the work and time, you can regain what you once had.

8. Paris Hilton

Hotel heiress Paris Hilton was already rich before she got really famous, but it seemed as if the richer she got on her own, the more emptyheaded she appeared. Of course, if her claim to fame was a sex-tape, she couldn’t have been too smart to begin with. But you do have to hand it to Hilton; she took that fame and ran with it, trying her best to spin-off into acting and singing. But her bad behavior finally caught up with her when a judge decided Hilton had violated her parole and ordered her to 45 days in jail (though she only spent three total behind bars). Was this persona really her, or just an act by a shrewd business woman? You decide.

7. Lindsay Lohan

Lindsay Lohan started out as that cute kid who did a charming turn in the remake of The Parent Trap , then turned into a capable actress that had a string of hits that included Freaky Friday and Mean Girls . But somewhere along the way, the talented redhead just completely imploded, and her hard partying ways started to overshadow her up and coming career. Like her former buddy Paris Hilton, Lohan had a few run-ins with the law before being sent to jail for violating her probation.

Also like Hilton, Lohan served a reduced sentence, although hers was at home due to overcrowding. She was sent to jail again for violating her community service agreement, and spent a total of five hours in the slammer due to (you guessed it) overcrowding. Lohan tried making several comebacks, and while they weren’t super successful, they did show that she was able to laugh at herself along with everyone else.

6. Amanda Bynes

Like Lindsay Lohan, Amanda Bynes started her career off as an adorable child actor. The difference was that Bynes started off on Nickelodeon while Lohan was a Disney star. Also like Lohan, Bynes was poised to be a force to be reckoned with on the comedy movie circuit, with movies such as She’s the Man , What a Girl Wants, Sydney White and Easy A under her belt. Then came the strange behavior on Twitter, with Bynes announcing a retirement from acting, then posting cryptic Tweets and half naked selfies. Then all heck broke loose, and Bynes’ parents finally had to step in. To be fair, Bynes did suffer from mental illness, but one has to wonder if the pressure from being an up and coming starlet added to her troubles.

5. Shia LaBeouf

Maybe there is something about working at Disney, since a lot of their former stars seem to go a little bonkers after they reach a certain level of fame. Case in point: Shia LaBeouf. LaBeouf started out as the awkward but funny kid from Disney’s Even Stevens , then moved onto feature films like Holes and Disturbia . But it was a little film called Transformers that put the actor over-the-top, and from there it looked like he could do no wrong. Well, that is until he actually did. Bar fights, plagiarism, Twitter feuds with Jim Carrey; and that happened all in a short time frame. He even showed up to a premiere with a paper bag over his head. It’s not too late for LaBeouf to change his ways, however he better start now before something even worse happens.

Oh, where to begin with Kayne West. It’s fine to be rich and talented, but most talented people don’t go on and on about how talented they are. They also don’t type in all caps when someone questions their talent on Twitter. But that’s West for you. Kim Kardashian’s other half is widely known for his outrageous behavior, such as jumping up on stage to interrupt Taylor Swift, asking a fan in a wheelchair to stand and literally claiming to be the greatest thing since sliced bread. We are sure many hoped that fatherhood would calm West down, but from the looks of it, he doesn’t plan on deflating his ego anytime soon.

3. Chris Brown

Up and coming singers can go one of two ways. They can shine as bright as the closest star, or they can flame out quickly, which then requires major damage control. Chris Brown falls in the latter group. At first, it seemed like Chris Brown had it all. He had a good voice combined with a decent stage presence, a career that had the hits beginning to form, and an equally famous girlfriend. But then the real Brown started to show, and it wasn’t pretty. Not only was he accused and plead guilty to assaulting Rihanna, the Forever singer also had an altercation with Drake and smashed a chair out of a window after a scheduled Good Morning America appearance. Brown has been on heavy damage control ever since, however the road to redemption looks to be a long one.

2. Miley Cyrus

Probably the best example of a Disney star trying to shed their goody-goody image, Mikey Cyrus has gone from a role model that parents weren’t afraid to let their kids admire to a twerking mess. Cyrus had a few minor scandals early in her career, however those were the types of mistakes that teenagers normally made. But things started getting interesting around 2009, when the then sixteen-year-old performed on a pole during the Teen Choice Awards, with more to come after the release of her prophetically-titled album Can’t be Tamed . In 2010, the Wrecking Ball singer chopped off her hair and began a new persona, one that involved twerking on a then 36-year-old Robin Thicke during a memorable performance at the VMA’s. Now, we aren’t saying it’s wrong to be edgy, since many performances have done so in the past. What might be Cyrus’ mistake is that it seems like she is trying way too hard to shed her former image, which can sometimes come off as desperate.

1. Mel Gibson

This one actually took a bit longer for people to see than others on the list. At first, Mel Gibson was considered a handsome young actor who could charm the pants off of anyone with his adorable accent. Then he later turned into an Academy Award winning director, which caused Hollywood to take him on a different, more serious level. The Lethal Weapon star would appear on Oprah and other talk shows, still grinning and wisecracking away. But then this happened: in 2006, after being arrested for a DUI, Gibson was said to have made some Anti-Semitic remarks that still haunt him to this day. Then, in 2010, a recording surfaced that showed Gibson making threats to his then wife Oksana Grigorieva. After the phone call, a restraining order was put in place. It just goes to show that crazy can come at any time, even at a later age.
