Signing for Chelsea was a milestone Romelu Lukaku had likely only experienced in his dreams before the 18-year-old put pen to paper on a £15.4m deal in August 2011. With chances few and far between under then Blues manager Andre Villas-Boas, his fairytale transfer never got off the ground. Despite prolific loan spells with West Bromwich Albion and Everton during his three-year stint at Chelsea, the former Anderlecht striker failed to score for his parent club before switching to Everton on a permanent basis in July 2014.

T9. Alexandre Pato – £15.4m
It’s saddening to imagine what Alexandre Pato could’ve been if not for a string of injuries three seasons in to his promising AC Milan career. Having arrived in Italy for £15.4m as a 17-year-old in August 2007, his decline began in 2011 following three impressive campaigns in which he looked capable of developing into one of the best strikers in world football. His troublesome hamstrings almost completed suffocated his talent and he eventually returned to Brazil in January 2013 after two devastating final campaigns at the San Siro.
