Among the popular people who include business people and celebrities who entered active politics by openly associating themselves with a particular political party, some are still doing well but the others unfortunately got victimized and have suffered due to it. Below are 5 popular people who got their careers and businesses ruined by politics. 5. Grace Omaboe – Maame Dokono The veteran actress was one of the most sort after actresses in Ghana. She aligned herself with the National Democratic Party through the 31st December Womens Movement. She contested as a parliament candidate on the ticket of the NDC but lost. After having issues with the Rawlings’, she defected to the opposition New Patriotic Party. She contested as a parliamentary candidate on the ticket of the NPP and lost once again. After the NDC won the election and came to power, her orphanage got shut down with rape and sodomy scandals amidst claims of her operating without a valid certificate. Clement Bonney – Mr. Beautiful He was one of the most used actors in the Kumawood movie industry. A very good actor with a great sense of humor. In the run up to the 2012 elections, he joined forces with other celebs like Abeiku Santana and openly campaigned for the National Democratic Congress and President Mahama. After the elections, his dominance in the Kumawood industry reduced. In an interview recently, he indicated that movie producers are victimising him and not using him in their movies because of his association with the NDC and President Mahama. he however vowed that he’ll forever campaign for President Mahama. He hasn’t appeared in any movie that I know of since 2012. 3. Lucky Mensah Highlife musician, Lucky Mensah was doing quite well until he decided to sing for the NDC. For advanced countries, this is very normal because he’s an adult and he has the freedom to associate with any political party he wants. However, as stated earlier, in this part of the world, that is a different story. After his association with the NDC and the NDC coming to power in 2008 his career started going down. In an interview he stated that people are not buying his albums anymore and the NDC has also abandoned him. He asked for the party to take care of him since it’s the song he did for them that has resulted in his career decline. He’s released a couple of materials since then but his dominance in the music industry is obviously gone. 2. Jewel Ackah Jewel is probably the first celebrity to do active politics. He recorded the first NDC song which is still used by the party. Jewel whose career was at an all time high at the time, suffered a lot with his association. He has never been able to get back to that level again. His music was shunned even on radio, his albums didn’t receive the same amount of acceptance they normally enjoy and his career just took a nose dive. In many interviews, he attributed his problem to the NDC affiliation. He tried to play it out by saying that he isn’t a member of the NDC but just an artiste who was contracted to record a song for the party. This didn’t work too as his career continued to head downhill. 1. Kwabena Darko – Darko Farms There is no one in Ghana who doesn’t know Darko Farms, unless the person is a 2000s born. Dr.Kwabena Darko owns the largest privately owned agro-industrial farm in Ghana. He is into poultry and his farm is called Darko Farms. From poultry birds to eggs, he dominated the industry since he was the only one doing it at that time on a large scale. He was doing well until he decided to contest the 1992 general elections. He came 4th with 2.8 per cent of the total votes cast. The election obviously had a toll on his finances and run down his farm. Things became different for the once vibrant Darko farms brand. His fowls and eggs were no longer in the market and he basically died.
