Then there are people who are so involved in awful relationships that more than their social lives are affected. Sometimes, a relationship can be so bad that it ruins a person’s career. And this is something that has happened to plenty of celebrities over the years. Not only is this terrible, but it is also an extremely public matter. Sure, some stars have been able to bounce back from crippling romances, but there are others who will never be looked at the same way ever again. These are people whose partners have affected the perception of them both personally and professionally. It’s sad to say that someone’s spouse sabotaged the person’s career, but there a lot of celebrities who have suffered this fate. There are athletes who were on brutal losing streaks and the fans blamed a girlfriend for all the losses. There are high profile ladies who will be eternally polarizing for sticking by their adulterating husbands. There are singers who became more known for their romantic trysts than for their actual music, forcing their careers to take a backseat. Then there are couples that were just so creepy and repulsive together that no one wants to look at them ever again, let alone hire them for any sort of project. I hate to be a hater, but it’s time to face the facts: these twelve celebs sabotaged their partner’s careers. 12. Jessica Simpson & Tony Romo I felt so bad for Jessica Simpson when she was dating Tony Romo. People had the nerve to blame her relationship with him for all of the times he messed up on the football field and when the Dallas Cowboys lost games. And it was just such bullshit. People relentlessly hated on her even though Tony Romo was the one fumbling all over the place. There may have been a correlation between Tony’s performance and his romantic relationship with Jessica Simpson, but there never seemed to be any causation to support this theory. I guess if you can’t come through during a football game, letting your girlfriend take the blame is all you can do? The whole thing was ridiculous. 11. Bill Clinton & Hillary Clinton I could not imagine what it is like to be Hillary Clinton. Political beliefs aside, I am sure it is so tough to be married to the President of the United States. And on top of that, he ended up getting with one of the interns while he was in office and embarrassed her on a global scale. She stuck by him both personally and professionally and the decision was very polarizing to the public. Many people questioned her character and her loyalty pretty much every time she ran for a new government position. She has been repeatedly punished for her husband’s adultery and it is just total bullshit. 10. Angelina Jolie & Billy Bob Thornton The relationship between Billy Bob Thornton and Angelina Jolie was beyond uncomfortable for anyone with a set of eyes. They were just so all over each other all the time. Every time they went anywhere it was a complete spectacle. They were just the grossest, most out there couple. People loved and respected them before because they are both such talented actors, but it really made them look bad to be in such a publicly tumultuous relationship especially when Billy Bobleft his fiance Laura Dern to get with Angelina. Angelina Jolie took her time to bounce back and has a whole new image, but Billy Bob’s career is just not the same anymore. Sure, he has had some great projects here and there, but it’s just hard not associating him with that relationship anymore. 9. I feel awful saying that, but what has she been up to these days professionally? I guess I could give her credit for inspiring Future’s bitter breakup songs, but her career itself really isn’t doing much these days. 8. Bobby Brown & Whitney Houston Whitney Houston was really America’s sweetheart. She had the voice of an angel and a pretty innocent public persona. Who knows what was really going on behind the scenes, but as soon as she got withBobby Brown her image definitely changed. She became more known for partying and her drama with Bobby Brown than she was for her musical talent. She became a punchline in jokes and it was just way too sad to see. I’m not saying I blame Bobby Brown for bringing her career down because she did everything of her own volition, but the public perception of Whitney definitely changed once these two got together and her career never really recovered. 7. Yoko Ono & John Lennon This is definitely the most famous case of spouse being blamed for ruining someone’s career. In fact,Yoko Ono was blamed for ruining four people’s careers since a lot of fans blame her romance with John Lennon as the reason behind the Beatles breaking up. Pretty much everyone else on this list has been referred to as “a Yoko Ono” because this career hitman was just that infamous. This pair is definitely the most extreme case of someone’s spouse destroying a person’s career. Even though so many people love John Lennon and his music, it is just sad the public opinion of this relationship had such a negative impact on his career. 6. Tommy Mottola & Mariah Carey The more I hear about the marriage between Mariah Careyand Tommy Mottola, the more horrified I am. He discovered her when she was a teenager, made her break up with her boyfriend, and then took complete control of her personal and professional life. He made her record songs that she did not want to and isolated her from her friends and family at a home in suburban New York. He was known to be controlling in all aspects possible and really inhibited her. In his memoir,Mottola creepily wrote, “If it seemed like I was controlling, I apologize. Was I obsessive? Yes. But that was also part of the reason for her success.” Thankfully, Mariah eventually escaped that marriage and his professional control and was able to live her life and have a career on her own terms. 5. Every Woman John Mayer Has Ever Dated At this point, I totally forgot that John Mayer is even a singer. When is the last time that any of his songs have been on the radio? I honestly can’t even tell you and I am one of those people who makes it a point to keep up with everything in pop culture. Now, I just think of womanizing when I hear his name. All of John’s tabloid relationships including those with Jessica Simpson, Jennifer Aniston, Taylor Swift, and Katy Perry have completely eclipsed his career at this juncture. The dude just needs to put the lady drama aside and focus on his work because he is basically a professional boyfriend these days. What career? 4. Kevin Federline & Britney Spears Aside from giving Britney two sons, the Kevin Federline era really did not do much good for Britney Spears. They got together while another woman was pregnant with his baby. Britney just really changed during their relationship. She became more known for eating Cheetos and making Starbucks runs with ratty extensions than for making hits. She became a tabloid fixture and got a constant influx of negative press. Then when she was rebounding from the relationship, things were especially difficult when she went into a downward spiral during the worst year of Britney fandom: 2007. This relationship really put a lot of people off and she became more known for that than for churning out hits. Thankfully, this era is far behind us. 3. Jennifer Lopez & Ben Affleck I’m not going to lie: I really lived for the Bennifer era. I loved how there was new relationship news aboutBen Affleck and Jennifer Lopez pretty much every day. Sure, their careers were falling to the wayside and no one really cared about the movies they were in during that time, but I just wanted to know about their romantic status and see what they were working on. This really did not work out well for Ben Affleck, though. He went from being a respected ingenue to a tabloid fixture; it was really hard for the fans, let alone anyone in the entertainment industry to take him seriously. He was not getting quality roles and his career was really spiraling. It took many years for him to bounce back from all the negativity that was associated with that relationship and get his career back on track. 2. Tom Cruise & Katie Holmes At first, this relationship was actually a great career move for Katie Holmes. Being with Tom Cruise made her more relevant than she ever was. People really cared about her as a celebrity and wanted to know everything about her. The TomKat era was just way too much though. Everyone became tired of them flaunting their love and it just got old really quick. Katie was even replaced in the Batman series by Maggie Gyllenhaal. And she was not cast in anything that did well. It was so hard to see her as anything other than Tom Cruise’s wife that no one really could believe that she was someone else in a movie. Even now, it is so hard to mention Katie Holmes without associating her with Tom Cruise in some way, shape, or form. 1. Kim Kardashian & Kanye West I personally feel like Kim and Kanye are unstoppable. No matter what people say about them, they will both always be relevant and they will always be successful in some way, but this is more about something that Kanye has voiced himself in regard to Kim’s impact on his career: “But soon as we started dating, fashion people were really opposed to the idea of reality stars. And all the relationships, the somewhat friends that I had somewhat built up, completely turned their backs on her and me. They already had their back to her, and now they turned it to me.” He has also made other comments about how being with Kim changed the perception of people had towards him as a rapper and that he basically did not care about what anyone thought or how it impacts him because he loves her so much. Say what you want about Kanye West, but no one could ever question his devotion to his wife. Even when his own career is at stake, he does not care as long as he has her.
