However, social media has become more than just a way to connect in recent years. It has become the focus of things like online bullying, fake followers, catfishing, and self-promotion. Celebrities have not been above these types of negative issues related to social media, and many have had to delete their accounts due to intense scrutiny over their posts. Kevin Hart When Kevin Hart first made a name for himself as a comedian/actor, it was more than just a little impressive to say the least. Hart had been in a few successful films in the early 2000s, but his career really started to skyrocket after the 2012 hit, Think Like a Man. From there, it seemed like every hit comedy film starred Kevin Hart, not to mention his starring television role on Real Husbands of Hollywood. Yet, many credit his social media presence as the biggest reason behind his excelling career. In fact, studio executives count on Hart’s social media savvy to promote their films. This became blatantly clear during the Sony hack incident, where Screen Gems President Clint Culpepper revealed Hart wanted more than the $3 million to promote the film via his social media. After it was leaked that he referred to Hart as a “whore,” Hart released a statement on Instagram saying, “I worked very hard to get where I am today. I look at myself as a brand and because of that I will never allow myself to be taken advantage of.” While his statement was admirable, he probably shouldn’t have admitted that he used his social media to promote his “brand” rather than to connect with fans. 9. Chris Brown After the 2009 Rihanna incident involving the assault charge, Chris Brown became one of the world’s most hated celebrities. It seemed like it would take a massive amount of positive public relations stunts to get him out of the hole he had dug for himself. Yet, that wasn’t the route Brown was going to take. Instead, he went on a downward spiral that included everything from Twitter wars to bizarre behavior and arrests. From homophobic slurs to saying that Cher needed “a beating,” Brown wasn’t going to get back in the public’s good graces anytime soon. Yet, when he became a father, people still hoped he would turn his life around. Instead, he became at odds with his baby’s mother, and posted their feud for all to see. In one post, he commented on how his child was being over-sexualized in a photo. The photo in question was of the little girl in a ballet-style ensemble and leg warmers, which the mother defended by saying, “If anybody thinks something is wrong with a baby…mad at the world in dance class… in her TUTU… U need to go pray!” Perhaps Brown should have kept his views against tutus to himself because it only made him look even crazier in the eyes of the public. 8. Justin Bieber While all celebrities have their own fair share of fanatics in their fan base, it’s undeniable that Justin Bieber fans have a tendency to go a bit overboard. Fans have been known to swarm and claw at him during meet-and-greets, and even get irate when he doesn’t stop to sign autographs. Yet, it’s surprising that the public hasn’t got enough of this “Baby” singer, especially since he’s known for sharing anything and everything via his social media sites. He’s notorious for posting shirtless pics on social media, and even a bubble bath photo or a naked butt shot or two. While those types of posts are bad enough, it’s the divulging of personal information that really takes the cake for Bieber. The most recent dialogue on Instagram involved Bieber addressing Selena Gomez fans for talking badly about his photos with new girlfriend, Sofia Richie. Gomez called him out by saying that it was his own fault for sharing something that should remain private, but Bieber took offense and accused her of cheating with Zayn Malik when they were dating. All of this negative publicity doesn’t seem like a smart move, since he’s already dug quite a deep hole for himself with his public persona. 7. Rihanna Rihanna has come under fire in recent years because her presence on social media has become far more edgier than her earlier years when she first arrived from Barbados. Some of her more provocative social media posts involved some that eluded to drug use, and even one romping with a stripper covered in money on Instagram. She was slammed by critics that said she wasn’t portraying her best self as a role model to young girls, but Rihanna continually refuted her willingness to fulfill the expectations of a “role model.” Some can forgive the fact that she should be allowed to post photos of her personal interests, even if that consists of naked stripper photos. Yet, there was an incident in 2014 that was much more difficult to forgive. Inspired by an ensemble Rihanna wore on the red carpet, 16-year-old Alexis Carter posted a photo of what she thought was a similar dress she wore to prom. Not only was she ridiculed by all of Twitter with the hashtag #PromBat, but Rihanna even posted a few tweets also making fun of the dress. Rihanna should definitely have accepted the imitation as flattery, or at least refrained from sharing her true feelings about the dress. 6. Beyonce Beyonce’s incredible star power has put her on a pedestal where the public would assume she is above all the nonsense typically associated with low rank celebrities. Beyonce would never telephone the paparazzi to tell them where she is, and she definitely wouldn’t digitally alter her social media photos—or would she? Ever since she embarked on her solo career, she has had an ultra large fanbase, which has included a huge following online. Beyonce’s legion of fans, The Beyhive, are fiercely loyal to her and have helped perpetuate her presence online. While she has used the Internet to promote her concerts and events, she has also strived to make her social media sites look very casual in sharing personal moments with her fans. Yet, some have noticed that many of her photo posts look contrived, and there are even some that have been digitally altered. Instances where she was caught Photoshopping her Instagram photos to create a thigh gap were a huge disappointed to her fans, especially coming from the woman that gave us “Bootylicious.” 5. Marlon Wayans Marlon Wayans is no stranger to controversy, especially since he donned “white face” during the 2004 film, White Chicks. The same can be said about his online presence, since he had a highly publicized feud with fellow comedian, Kevin Hart. Yet, that feud was pretty hilarious to followers since it involved some great clothing criticisms and ultra-witty back-and-forth. However, one of his 2014 Instagram posts wasn’t getting the same amount of love. While attending a Beyonce/Jay Z concert, Marlon took a selfie while including a Caucasian woman standing next to him. The caption read, “Man I got the most UNRHYTHMIC WHITE WOMAN dancing next to me at the jay and bay concert… This b**** dancing to AC/DC.” The public pounced on Wayans, and called him out as a racist. So, he probably should have kept that little comment to himself. In the meantime, the woman was later revealed to be none other than Australian singer, Delta Goodrem. She clapped back online with a video of Seinfeld’s famous thumb dance video of Elaine Benes, with the caption, “Had a blast last night.” Not only did the incident make him look bad as a human being, but it made him look bad as a comedian, since he got schooled by his “victim.” 4. Khloe Kardashian It shouldn’t come as a surprise that Khloe Kardashian is a bigger oversharer on social media, since she is the little sister of Kim. She has shared a fair amount of half naked clothing, and of course, she never fails to promote some questionable products for financial gain. Yet, it’s the feuding she partakes in that really has people wishing she would deactivate her social media accounts. The biggest incident involved a back-and-forth between her and Chloe Grace Moretz. It became Khloe vs. Chloe online, but it was Moretz that ultimately won the battle. Moretz made the comment, “Everyone in this industry needs to get their heads out of a hole and look around to realize what’s ACTUALLY happing in the REAL world,” which referenced the Kardashians need to show off their female parts for all to see. Kardashian replied with a photo of Moretz wearing a red bikini that is accidentally pushed to the side to reveal her derriere, with the caption, “Is this the hole you’re referring to @ChloeGMoretz???” However, it was later revealed that the girl in the photo was not Moretz, and just a girl that unfortunately had her “hole” plastered on social media. Once the mix-up was cleared up, it only made Kardashian look even more foolish. 3. Amber Rose When Amber Rose was first introduced to the public, she was simply known as the mystery woman on the arm of Kanye West on the red carpet. She was often seen but seldom heard, and information on this mystery woman seemed to trickle in at an incredibly slow rate. Even after the two split, she was always very tight-lipped about her relationship with West. However, once she became the “baby mama” to Wiz Khalifa, she seemed to get more emboldened. Her social media presence was always filled with overshares, since she became known for posting nude photos and questionable parenting modes. Yet, it wasn’t until she got involved in the Twitter feud between Khalifa and West that the true TMI began. After being called out for being a former stripper (among other damning tweets), Rose finally clapped back with the statement, “Awww @kanyewest are you mad I’m not around to play in ur a**hole anymore?” With gay rumors swirling around West for years, this created a huge sensation on the Internet. Perhaps Rose should have kept this little tidbit of information to herself. 2. Kim Kardashian Kim Kardashian has always been known for oversharing, ever since she was made famous by the sex tape she made with Ray J. Yet, as her star began to rise, she seemed to be even more willing to fully expose all of her personal details to the public. She’s not above posting a plethora of scantily clad selfies, and even endorse products for financial gain on her social media sites. Yet, her most recent blunder comes with a much higher consequence than just self-degradation. Putting herself in the middle of the feud between her husband, Kanye West, and Taylor Swift, Kardashian posted a secretly taped conversation to Snapchat for the world to see. The video featured Kanye West calling Taylor Swift to talk about his upcoming song that featured lyrics about the “Shake It Off” singer. Swift seemed fine with it, but then became super upset once the song was released. Kardashian released the Snapchat video in an effort to show how Swift actually knew about it prior to the release. Yet, it brought up certain questions of legality, since Swift did not give permission to be taped and was recorded secretly. Perhaps, Kardashian should never have posted the video because then no one would have ever known. 1. Amanda Bynes When Amanda Bynes was first introduced to audiences through The WB and Nickelodeon, no one could have predicted how drastically her public persona would change. While transitioning into adulthood, her behavior seemed to get even more bizarre with each new post on social media. Although the half-naked photos were enough to cause alarm, it was the written posts that were the most disturbing. From calling out to Drake to “murder” her lady parts to telling Rihanna, “Chris Brown beat you because you’re not pretty enough,” the public soon learned that Bynes was far from her Nickelodeon character. Yet, it was her statements about her father that drew the most heat. She took to Twitter, and accused her father of sexually, physically, and verbally abusing her as a child, but then later retracted her statements. Her mother released her own statement, saying that the accusations stem from her mental state. It’s hard to say which of her many statements were the overshare, but presumably they all were.
