2. Bruce Springsteen – Would Rather Be Born Elsewhere
What could be more American than apple pie? Bruce Springsteen‘s anthem Born in The USA, that’s what. July 4th is nothing without this song blaring in someone’s backyard or in some small town parade. The album cover features a great big American flag as well. Most people just hear what they want to hear because this song is the opposite of patriotic. It is a scathing attack on American Pride, the Vietnam war and the troubles of the working man in the country. The lyrics are obvious as there really is no hidden meaning: “Got in a little hometown jam. So they put a rifle in my hand. Sent me off to a foreign land. To go and kill the yellow man. Born in the U.S.A. I was born in the U.S.A. Come back home to the refinery. Hiring man says. Son if it was up to me”. Sometimes hidden messages aren’t so hidden.
