Be yourself… until she is hurting. You should be messing up her bed, not her life. Even though it is better to be full of yourself than empty, your freedom cannot be at its full potential when you decide to have a girlfriend. The seriousness of a relationship is measured by a smile: don’t make her sad, and don’t make her mad.

#1 You can’t black out whenever you want . What is it called when you have a fear of looking inside your wallet after going out? Pray you don’t have this phobia. For example, your buddies are making fun of you for becoming such a miser. They are calling you out every weekend to get wasted, just like old times. A few times a year is cool, but if you blackout every Saturday, you are probably going to fall out of love. No girl likes her boyfriend to be a drunk. She loves Beyonce, and she loves when you are drunk in love.

Another example: you are meeting her parents and her dad wants to have a drink with you. You don’t want to give off the impression of being a lightweight. That doesn’t mean you should drink the whole bottle and puke all over the bathroom in her parent’s house. Alcohol might be a magic poison that kills all of your insecurities, but it can also kill your relationship.

#2 You shouldn’t go out with her girlfriends. Keep your dignity. If your girlfriend is out of town for a month because of her job, don’t go out for coffee or a drink with her friends. Maybe they have a deal with your girlfriend to check up on you.

First of all, those are her girlfriends, and unless they are in serious trouble, don’t hang out with them—and especially don’t go out with them. You never know which of her friends are jealous of your relationship, and are just waiting for an opportunity to notice your weak spot when you’re drunk. The evil one will wait for you to say something you shouldn’t. She is likely on the hunt for Freudian slips. The day after, she will call your girlfriend and say, “It was all fun and games until…”

#3 You mustn’t buy into the idea of bros before hoes. NO! Maybe when you were 12 and a virgin. If you are over 20 and you truly believe this sentence, examine your life. Do you seem to always wind up drunk and alone? If you still believe this line, you may just be that loser who gets married, then yells at his wife for daring to ask to spend more time with him. Your teenage life should be behind you.

#4 Get your sh*t together and get your socks together! You can be fit and sexy and your girlfriend may be into you, but if you start leaving dirty socks and briefs all over the place, you will make her sick. We’re almost two decades into the new century, so we shouldn’t even have to cover this point, but this phenomenon still exists in modern relationships. Being messy is not hot, it is not cool, and it is definitely not macho. Tomorrow, you will show up in your clean shirt, smelling nice, but she will still remember the horror scene she saw when she was brushing her teeth. Dirty minds can be a good thing, but dirty habits will never be appreciated.

#5 You should not cancel plans with your girlfriend to hang out with your friends . If you’ve made romantic plans and your girlfriend is about to come home in order for the two of you to have dinner, don’t take any calls from your bros. They’ll likely say, “Hey, we’re about to pass by your house. We come bearing beer!” Although you might have a couple of hours to kill, just say no .

Although it may seem harmless, one thing will lead to another, and your girlfriend will show up, ready for a romantic dinner, only to find your buddies passed out on your couch. Unless your buddies are going to cuddle in close, you can bet you’ll be sleeping alone.

#6 Never make fun of your girlfriend in front of other people. You might think you’ve been together for a long time, and she won’t be mad if you make some jokes about her in front of your friends, but you’re wrong—especially if it’s related to something only the two of you know about. No matter how long you’ve been dating, this is not funny. It is rude, inconsiderate, and stupid.

If you have confidence issues and you think making fun of your girlfriend is going to make you a stand-up comedian, you deserve to be single. Even if the joke is funny and your girlfriend is laughing, next time try to present your inner clown in a more private setting.

#7 You shouldn’t watch porn. When you frequently go online to masturbate, you’re not only wasting your libido on your hand—you’re also raising the bar for your girlfriend’s performances. It is bad enough that she has to compete with all of your exes—don’t make her compete with porn, too. Sex is a way for you two to connect, not a way for you to fulfil your unrealistic, porn-fed expectations. If you’re getting some from a woman, give your hand a break.

#8 You shouldn’t leave annoying Facebook statuses. Nowadays, the mantra, “express yourself” seems to be closer to “represent yourself.” Rather than trying to appear a certain way on social media sites like Facebook and Instagram, be yourself and be responsible.

For instance, if you have something you need to discuss with your girlfriend, give her a call, or have her over. Don’t post passive-aggressive status updates for her to find and stew over. This will only generate a bigger communication gap—and a whole lot of resentment, much to the amusement of your social media friends. The same goes for trying to make her jealous by posting pictures of yourself with other women, or flirting with your female friends online.
