Early morning patrol by members of a local vigilante group in Port Harcourt, Rivers State resulted in the rescue of a newborn baby from a waste bin in front of Mile 3 motor park.
Godstime Ihunwo, the Chief Security Officer of Nkpolu Oroworukwo community who led the patrol, discovered the baby girl wrapped in cloths and placenta, less than six hours old.
He immediately contacted a female nurse for urgent medical attention and a Human Rights Activist, Prince Wiro, who accompanied him to the Nkpolu Police station to make a formal complaint.
“While on routine patrol on Friday morning, 28 April 2023, at about 3am, I discovered a newborn baby who is less than 6 hours old.
“As at the point of discovery, the baby was still wrapped with cloths and placenta.
“I rescued the child and immediately called a female nurse for urgent medical attention for the baby. Upon inspection by the nurse, she discovered that the baby is a girl.
“I called a Human Rights Activist to my office, who accompanied me to Nkpolu Police station to make a formal complaint,” he said.
The baby is now receiving medical attention, while the Coordinator of the Centre for Basic Rights Protection and Accountability Campaign, Prince Wiro, has advised young mothers who are unable to take care of their children after birth to seek help from the relevant government agencies rather than abandoning them.
