Anambra State Ministry of Women and Social Welfare, in conjunction with the state police command, has arrested Chinyere Ifesinachi for allegedly assaulting her house help, Idinmachukwu, with a pestle and cane.
A viral video circulating on social media shows the little girl’s swollen eyes and injuries sustained all over her body as a result of the beating.
Commissioner for Women and Social Welfare, Ify Obinabo, confirmed the arrest and stated that the culprit would be charged to court. Ifesinachi pleaded with the commissioner to forgive her, claiming that her “actions were orchestrated by the devil.”
She admitted to using both a cane and pestle to beat her house girl, stating that she did so because the house girl threw her child to the ground.
Obinabo reassured the victim of her safety, explaining that she would not be returning to the culprit’s house after being taken to the hospital for a medical examination.
She commended the Police command for their continuous partnership with her Ministry and warned that anyone caught abusing a child in the state must face the consequences. Obinabo also praised those who raised the alarm that brought the incident to her attention.
According to reports, the biological parents of the maid sent their daughter to live with the culprit since March after she delivered twins and was struggling to cope.
The parents of the child, who did not want their names mentioned, said, “Our daughter left us in March, but it is very unfortunate that barely two months of her stay, she got all kinds of ill-treatments from a woman who was supposed to be her guardian.”
Additionally, Obinabo acknowledged the support of Nigerians in the diaspora, who have paid off the first hospital bill of the child as she undergoes medical examinations and treatments to determine the extent of the damage caused by her abuser.
