Afrobeat musician Seun Kuti was rushed back to the magistrate court in Yaba, Lagos by the police on Thursday for a secret hearing, during which the police requested a four-day extension to conclude their investigations.
Seun had been arraigned in court on Tuesday for allegedly assaulting a police officer, and he was granted a suspended bail. However, the Chief Magistrate and Registrar of the Yaba Court had not yet signed Seun’s bail papers, causing a delay.
Without informing Seun’s lawyers, the police took him to court again on Thursday, seeking the magistrate’s permission to hold him for more days. A source revealed that the Chief Magistrate commenced a secret hearing without notifying Seun’s legal representatives.
Seun’s lawyers are currently heading to court to address the situation.
The Chief Magistrate Court in Yaba, Lagos had previously granted bail to Seun Kuti on Tuesday and ordered the police to complete their investigation into the alleged assault within 48 hours.
The Chief Magistrate also instructed the police to remove themselves from prosecuting him and forwarded the case file to the Lagos State Directorate of Public Prosecutions for prosecution.
According to police prosecutors, the assaulted policeman was in a coma and receiving treatment at an undisclosed hospital.
